Serious about Nikon D850 what FX lens to start with. I have always had Nikon..Currently using D 7200. I have had it since the first year it came out My DX lenses are 50 mm 35 mm 18-70 mm 18-200 mm 18-140 mm all Nikon...and a 100 mm F 2.8 Macro Tokina I like landscape, flowers, all out doors photography, I like the 18-140 for all a round and its lighter.

I have been using the 28-300 f 3.5/5.6 G as a walk around lens for years with my D800 & D850.

If you like the 18-140 the equivalent in an FX would be 27-210 so try and get close to that?

If landscape is your thing, you might want to consider the Nikon Z7 instead of the D850. I have both and use the D850 for wildlife and the Z7 for landscape. It's lighter, mirrorless (no focus finetuning) and with great liveview function, which is nice for landscapes.

I use a 24-70mm f2.8 without VR as the "default" lens on my D850. It is a good match and not excessively heavy or bulky. Last summer, I bought a very nice used 24-120mm f4, also a Gold Ring lens, as an alternative for my D500. Price was $425 at my local camera store, but I had to also purchase a lens hood for another $25 or so from KEH. It works fine on the D850 as well. There is a sense that it does not transfer color quite as well, but it is easy to compensate for that.

Any lens will provide better results on the D850 than on just about any other camera, but I'd suggest avoiding wide range zooms and keeping to a zoom range of 3X or 4X. (The 24-120 is a 5X zoom with a constant f4 maximum aperture, but it works fine, even if not outstandingly.)

The 28-300 does everything well, but having two lenses, the 24-85 + 70-300 is what I prefer, as most of my shooting is between 24 and 85, so why lug around all those extra mms, especially indoor?

Since you are going for a high resolution camera, go with the best lenses. 24-70 2.8e and 70-200e would be excellent/versatile lenses. From there, wider or longer, you might want to consider primes.

Here is Nikon’s list of recommended lenses for the D850.

Yes, they probably do this to sell you the better stuff, but also so you get the top quality out of the high-end high-resolution sensor that will more easily reveal flaws in any lens.

Notice the lack of “super-Zooms” like the 28-300? Those will have compromises to get that range, which is handy, but not the sharpest arrow in Nikon’s quiver.
I use it when I’m shooting something I know I won’t be needing for serious work like charity golf tournaments. Love it for that, but won’t be making anything bigger than a 5x7.

That body deserves the best lenses, otherwise you could do as well with something less.

BTY, Nikon doesn’t make a DX 50mm lens, so now you have another full frame lens you can use, assuming the Tokina is one.

The D780 is a wonderful place to start. A used D810 is good. The D850 is really the apex and a great camera.

I agree! I have a D850 with many lenses including the trifecta set. But, I carry the 28-300 around as a mainstay for versatility. Doesnt do as well in low light but daytime shooting is fine. I have used it on a D810 as well with some winner results.

I have used a Nikkor 28-85 f/3.5-4.5 for quite some time on both my D800e and my D850. Now, if your photographic interests require a longer focal length, I also use a Nikkor 70~200 f/2.8.

The D850 can automatically crop for your DX lenses. The best lenses for the D850 include the new Nikon E lenses that were especially formulated for Nikon's higher pixel camera's.
BUT, you will really see an excellent difference using your DX lenses on the D850 VS. the D7200.
You are making an excellent choice in the D850, best Nikon camera I have ever used and that includes my D4s and D5.
I do have the battery out of the D5 to get 9 fps because I use it for wildlife and I also have the vertical grip for that same reason.
I must tell you that when I use the D850 shooting in Florida's wetlands my buddies know I'm shooting that camera cause it is LOUD. I mean LOUD, but I LIKE it, a lot. You are really going to like the results you get from this outstanding camera.
You may also consider WHEN you buy, about 4 times a year Nikon reduces the price on the D850 and usually throws in the vertical grip for free. They may do it soon. So, stay tuned.

I have 2 D850s. Bought one last August and another in November. Except for the D5, the best DSLR I have used since our first D1

I usually carry the Nikon 24-120 f4 and an older Nikon 70-200 f2.8. I get excellent results from both.
