That is how bananas were originally shipped to the States, on refrigerated ships.Read “Banana the fate of the fruit that changed the world” by Dan Koeppel.
My Stop-n-Rob a block away has bananas most days. I make a daily trip there to get my drinks and snacks and I usually get a couple of bananas when I do. In the past I have used the refrigerator trick.

I lived in Jamaica for almost 9 years. I've seen stalks with 12 finger hands.
It took 5 years before I could eat bananas over here again.
Once you have had them tree ripened it is a very different experience.
Yes, you can hold them in the fridge.
Here is another trick, they will tend to ripen slower if you break the hand apart when first get them.
Leaving them all connected, they tend to ripen all at once.
The ones that get over ripe make good banana bread.
More bananas make the bread more moist.
choose one with a little green in the stem, all yellow, no spots.

I have found many freshly pulled fruits and nuts to be best when just pulled at their ripe state "on the vine".
For example, peanuts within a day they were pulled.
I've put bananas in the fridge for years. I do not like ripe bananas so I buy them with a slight tinge of green at their stem end and put them in the fridge. Always have a good tasting (at least to me) banana.

I read somewhere that bananas should not be placed in the fridge.
