I am not a Nikon shooter, but my wife uses it on her D500. She tells me that the images are sharp but noisy. But for the weight she prefers the Tamron 150-600 g2

My 300 f/2.8 was broken when I slipped in the mud photographing eagles. Too old to be repaired. I bought the Nikon 200-500 which got me through a football season. I did not like the way the zoom changed length while zooming as the longer length made it catch the wind and it is always windy along the rivers when looking for eagles or pelicans. I bought the 300 PF and LOVE the lens. I have used it with all three teleconverters. I had thought about getting the tripod collar but the image stabilization is amazing.
Shot as Jpeg on D500. The eagle is with the 1.7 converter and the pheasant is with the 2x, both handheld.

I am 77 and live in Houston, TX. I own and use the same 300mm f4 P and the same Nilon 1.4x tc on my full frame and dx bodies all the time. It is a joy to use and very light weight. I also own and use the Nikon 500mm f5.6 P lens both with and without the ame 1.4x tc. It just about lives on my D 500. I use it hand held and on a tripod. Check out both of them. For nature work you cannot beat them if you can live with their mi imum apertures. Some can, some cannot.

The 300PF + 1.4TC is an excellent combo, but on a D750 it'll come up short much of the time. I'd recommend a 500PF - super light, incredibly fast and sharp.

Currently I have a Tamron 150-600mm G1 lens with Nikon D750, and am considering upgrading to a lighter lens. I am 76 years old and would like to switch to lighter gear. I would like to know from UHHers who have used Nikon 300mm F/4 VR PF lens with a TC-14E iii what is their experience. I will be using for wild life photography. I will not be using for sport/ action photography. I realize by switching to prime lens I will loose the zoom but hopefully I will get an edge to edge sharper and faster lens. Look forward to hearing your opinions.

PF lenses are great, much smaller and lighter.

Do you have this lens? If so what is your experience?

I have the Nikon 300mm F4 PF for 3 years now. I'm 70 yrs old. I traded in my Sigma 120-400mm. I use the 300mm f4 on a Nikon D7100. I also purchased the 1.4 III Teleconverter. The size and weight, combined with the reach you achieve with the lens is astounding. If you take a look at my pics, 95% are captured using this lens. I highly recommend the 300mm, it will be the last telephoto lens you'll buy.

If weight is a concern have you considered micro 4/3. Olympus has great cameras and lenses. For my PenF I have a Panasonic 100-300mm lens there is also a 100-400 lens. Olympus has a 300mm f4. The set up is very light and flexible.

could you explain the real difference among Nikon 300mm f4 and the precious brother 300mm f2.8 which costs 4 times more, i used both and frankly speaking i didn't see huge difference in quality of photos , the huge difference is weight , i need a sherpa to carry it and his price

Or... try an alternate approach to a "heavy" lens by doing some upper body strength-building. Worked for me at the young age of 72 and there are additional benefits. I also switched from Canon (5D4 + 600) to Sony (a7R4 + 200-600), not for the weight, however.

I have the 300mm f4 PF and the older version of the Nikon teleconverter (tc ii) and use it with the D500, with great results. It's much lighter than the big 150-600 Sigma or Tamron lenses and with the crop frame camera still get a nice equivalent reach of 600 mm.

Excellent lens, works very well with the TC 1.4E III. Its my carry around combo fitted to my D850. Light, fast and brilliant IQ. Go for it!

I have a D500 with the 300mm PF and TC1.4E II. This is as good as it gets for a lightweight walk around combination. It balances nicely and acquires focus fast.
