That is silly. How is he short? The traveler didn't stay there so the motel owner was never entitled to any money. He has exactly the money he started with. And the books will balance as the accounts receivable will match the accounts payable just as they did before.

Exactly!

In a weird way it worked out. Everyone is ahead of the game and got the ball rolling.

Hi,
Not quite , you forgot about the sales tax and state and federal taxes .

In the UK, if a company starts off with £113.80 and wishes to pay an employee a £100, the employee ends up with £68 after employers national insurance , income tax and personal national insurance

If the employee then but say a table lamp with the £68 they will have paid £11 in Value Added Tax (20% sales tax)

So the company started with £113.80 and the Gov got 50%, and thats just for a basic rate tax payer !
Hi, br Not quite , you forgot about the sales tax... (show quote)

Pretty much the same here, but we have no insurance, or pensions...it all goes to the military to buy depreciable assets, which are overpriced and obsolete in a month.

It is a slow day in the small town of Podunk, and streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night.

As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.

The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op.

The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit.

The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner.

The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.
At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves. No one produced anything. No one earned anything...
However, the whole town is now out of debt and now looks to the future with a lot more optimism.

Is this how a Stimulus package works?

You forgot tax's! Everyone has to pay tax's (except the hooker) By the time the money gets back to the hotel the governments have a good chunk of it.
If this keeps up only the governments (and the hooker) will have any money!

It's a matter of balancing the books at the end of the week, or month, or whatever. The hookers $100.00 never saw the hotel bank account. No matter how ya cut it the hotel guy rented a room and does not have the $100.00.

He never rented a room. The tourist said he wanted to inspect the rooms and decided not to rent one. In the end everyone had exactly the amount of money they started with, but were out of debt. Everyone gained except the tourist, since he had no debt to start with.

Simple acrual based accounting. Each person had an account payable and an account receivable. All offset each other.

This is how governments work. I'm not disputing that. What I am saying is that the hotel owner never deposited the hundred in his account. He still does not have the hookers payment. It doesn't matter the cause of the lost hundred. It's not in his possession. Yes, as far as the hooker is concerned the debt is paid. But the payment never made it to the bank. When the auditor does the books the hotel owner comes up $100.00 short.

This is a perfect example of what money is. That paper has no value. It is a promise of value. It lets different transactions take place without bartering.
And you are another good example of someone who argues loudest and longest is often wrong.

That is an oversimplification of what economists call the velocity of money.
