I have hit that Magic age where my hands aren't steady. I am using my tripod more frequently with my Nikon D7100. Is there another device I can use besides the little gimmick that Nikon makes with more distance... more non directional to set the shutter off... something simple... I do not need bells and whistle... No, I don't want to do a camera delay setting...already increasing shutter speed. Non cellphone solution... still need to use the hot shoe for the Nikon Commander for Speedlites... I thank you all in advance...

simplest and most reliable - no batteries, no phone, no electronics is a basic wired shutter release. Leaves the camera unconnected except the wired remote socket which has no use for anything else. As your standing next to the tripod it doesn't have to be more than a couple of feet long. If you can get one with a coiled lead even better as you can't accidentally jog the camera or over tension the cable when connected, also when coiled just let it hang off the camera as it wieghs next to nothing.

I also have a 3rd party remote flash trigger which is bi-directional ie the camera can fire a remote flash, or pressing the button on the remote flash trigger will fire the camera. Mounts on the flash shoe but has through connections for a flash or whatever above. Bit more fussy but means I can use remote flash from a good distance, and stiff fire the camera and if necessary a second camera mounted flash.
I probably use the simple ebay manual cabled trigger 10x as often (probably 50x as often if I think about it! :)

Get a radio controlled system. The transmitter goes on your hot shoes and the flash goes on the receiver. Range up to 600 ft., can be used around corners. There are several brands, most all are under $100. You can get additional receivers to add more flash units. But this might not be what you’re looking for.

The problem with the infrared triggers is you have to aim at the front of the camera. Nikon makes a wifi adapter. The wu-1, I believe. I have one, and it works ok. But requires a smart phone and some patience.

Pick up one of these. Easy to use and can be used from any direction and can trigger a remote flash.

Ditto on this one! I can transfer it to any camera by getting a different cable. Works great and is inexpensive.

It was my understanding that the D6 now features Bluetooth. Presumably that will allow remote control of the camera from your Bluetooth capable phone. So forget about attaching wires to your camera. Just buy a D6.

I've been using the Flashpoint Wave Comander for over 7 years and it has never failed (not a single time and I use it daily). I paid less than 20 bucks for it and it has a range of 320' I can trigger flashes with it too (500' away)!

I also have a D7100 and use either the Nikon wired release or a Yongnuo RF605N Wireless Flash Trigger. The wireless says for "flash", but comes with a cable to connect it to a port on the D7100. I bought it from B&H about 1-1/2 years ago when I got tired of the Nikon IR being overwhelmed by sunlight. If I am taking photos around the yard, etc. with a tripod I prefer the wired release. When I am taking photos of family events and need to be in the picture I go wireless, easy to hide in your hand or behind someone. I find both have their place and work well.

I bought the Nikon remote about 10 years ago to use with a D5000. Can't remember the price, but I am pretty sure it was around $25. Also, I can't remember what I paid for the Yongnuo. It was was probably around $40 and not more that $50. Check with B&H for current prices. Also KEH might have these available.

Nice to know. I use Panasonic Lumix camera. How does the app work in the field?

When shooting birds at the feeder, I use a 20’ cable release which I purchased at B&H quite a few years ago. Hope this helps.
