OK, Conspiratorists. (SP) What is wrong? Shadows, flag wrong, what?
Is that the moon above the horizon
Some people ask, who took the picture. It was taken by a camera mounted to the landing module and pointed in the direction of the steps.
Or, I got there first and had my camera set on a tripod.

Nothing is wrong. Photo taken at the Alabama Space and Rocket Center from the Moon landing simulation pit back in 1986.

I would have though they would have put the Earth in the background for a moon simulation pit.

Well that was discussed I understand, but since the Moon was already there the NASA Administrator decided it would be too difficult to swap the Moon and Earth again as they did in 1969.

The astronaut is lit from the upper right, long shadow behind to the left indicates a fairly low light source.
The heavenly body is showing a terminator on the lower right, indicating it is lit from the upper left. I would guess it's supposed to be the earth but I can't identify any of the features.
None of this convinces me that the astronaut was not on the moon. Only that the photo is a composite.
(And by the way, the flag would be held out by a wire. Since the moon landings were so long ago, the flag is most likely pure white by now, bleached by the UV from the sun, unfiltered by any atmosphere. Unless, of course, the UV has so seriously degraded the flag material that it has disintegrated.

Shadow of the astronaut in one direction and flag shadow in the other.

What camera? What lens? Next time, use "Store Original" so we can better answer your questions.
Is that a Russian Astra naught with an American Flag?
I really don.t see a flag shadow.

The image is reverted (flipped) from the official photo released.

How many notice the moon in the background sky?
