I have used a Mac for years and backed up with Time Machine. However, over the last few months, it has become a real pain and often gives me an error message saying it cannot do the job. I am not totally sure if this started when I upgraded to Catalina but, given the other headaches that upgrade has created, it may be the case.

I am considering SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

I would love some input and, maybe another solution if people have had luck with another program. I want something I buy not something that comes with a subscription.

FWIW:I back up to two Western Digital 4T external drives. These have been set up so they are compatible with the Mac.

Thanks
Ron

Ron,

Hands down Carbon Copy Cloner is the best you can buy for Macintosh. He has a really great program that does what you are looking for and it always works. I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner since a year or two after it was introduced and would never go back to SuperDuper. SD trashed 4 drives in an aluminum MacPro to the point I had to install all new drives in the Mac in order to recover my data. I called the owner of SD and he said it's not my fault.

Mike Bombich is great and he even answers help phone calls himself.

Thanks for this, it is exactly the type of response I was hoping to get.

I have been watching on the side for a similar answer. Also a Mac user and looking for advice regarding an excellent backup application. Thank you!

Did you try Apple support?

Yes, my track record with Apple Support is less than great especially problems that may well be related to Catalina. I have used Macs since my first in 1990. Over the years, I feel Apple has taken more than a few steps backwards. Look at the lack of ports on the newer MacBooks.

And I have installed the 30-day trial of Carbon Copy Cloner!

I have the software but because I had been using Time Machine to back up, CCC will not let me use the drive I was using. Any help to fix this problem? I have a request into CCC but if anyone here knows the answer, I would love to hear it.

You should not use the Time Machine drive for CCC. Use another one and keep using Time Machine and CCC to a different drive that way you have the best of both worlds.

If you do not want to do the above then you will need to erase the TM drive with Disk Utility so CCC can then use it. I think the problem is CCC will not overwrite a TM drive.

Thanks for this. I figured that was going to be the case but had only one of my externals here and so could not copy a few things from it to the other to be safe.

Don't forget to remove the drive(s) from TM before you format and use them with CCC.

On the other hand, I have had wonderful success with SuperDuper, and on the rare occasions I have needed technical support, it has been outstanding. I use it on the same drive as time machine, divided into a partition for each backup method.

AGREE! Have used CCC for years. It is great for making bootable clones. If your Mac HD/SSD fails, and you have a recent bootable clone, you can be up and running quickly.
You should also have a method to recover individual files that were not on the clone. I use OneDrive.

You might consider Acronis. I've successfully used it for 15 years. I've recovered entire drives, including the OS drive.

Good luck,

I have tried several back-up softwares in the past and had terrible luck with them. So now I backup by copying to another hard drive. I keep a copy of my operating system on a thumb drive.
