No visual clue to size.

A slightly smaller species that look like the monarch is the viceroy ... cute huh ? The lesser noble title for the “lesser monarch”.

Since that plant doesn’t look like milkweed I figger it’s a viceroy ... and acoarst its name is Vic, or Vicki, unless it’s Roy, or Dale, or Trigger.

I agree, a Viceroy.

The main visual difference between the viceroy and monarch butterfly is the black line drawn across the viceroy's hind wings, which monarch butterflies do not have. Note also the pronounced spots on the monarch's head.

The viceroy is also a bit smaller than the monarch. The caterpillars of monarchs and viceroys are significantly different in appearance as well.

So this looks like a monarch.

Then maybe we should call him Smokey, or Puff.

It's a male monarch. He's feeding on echinacea. Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed but will feed on all flowers.

He's a Suthrun butterfly and his full name is George-Bob.

His brother's name is Billy-Bob, his sister is Sally-Bob and their somewhat daft little brother is Bubba-Joe.

Not a Viceroy, definitely a monarch.
