My D800 has severe BF issues. I sent the camera and lens trilogy to Nikon for adjustment. All came back perfect under warranty.

Supposedly you can remove the bottom of the camera, then use the 3 accessible adjustment screws to align the AF sensor module.

An ideal project if you are in lockdown: tweak, mount, do a set of tests,......... tweak, mount, do a set of tests............tweak, mount, do a set of tests............................... repeat until .......................

I believe this is correct Grahame, I remember seeing info on this....I will look later today to see if I can find. It would probably be "hit-or-miss" w/o proper alignment tools, but with time one should be able to bring it in to where the AF fine tune could add additional compensation. Hang in there Pistnbroke. Most likely a drop knocked the AF section a bit off kilter....

No not the AF fine tune. +20 does not pull it in its right off the scale needing maybe + 40 but of course it dont go that far. any suggestions?

I Love DIY (practice it often) but have not found a service manual for the D800 (Yet), but did find this Nikon D800 Parts Listing, it is inexpensive, and may show some helpful details, and may be helpful for future endeavors. I have used this service a few times (downloaded their manuals), they deliver on the downloads, and portend to have parts for many cameras and lenses. https://uscamera.com/product/nikon-d800-parts-list/
If you search for Nikon D800 Repair Manual, you will get some hits, but I don't have any actual experience with them, US Camera has helped me on several manuals and parts lists.
Hope this is helpful, good luck.

Just bought a very cheap D800 with back focus off the scale ( +40 ) .Is it possible to get it back to normal ?

You may want to call or email AP-T (Albuquerque Photo-Tech) which is a Nikon authorized repair shop. I talked to the owner at AP-T some time ago about a D800 I have that is prone to back-focus more than my other bodies and he told me he had software from Nikon that would allow a global fine-focus adjustment of between -125 to +125. Meaning he could adjust the global base value up +40 for you (assuming the +40 relative adjustment is in the +/-125 absolute range).

Me thinks you have now bought a manual focus camera. What is the return policy?

Oh well! After reading his posts I remembered that a fellow over the Nikonians website had the similar problem and sent his D800 to Nikon for repair. Nikon found the crack in the body which caused the imaging sensor to sit slightly not in the correct position. I think replacing the body casting is so involved that Nikon told him it's beyond repair. I suggested to the OP that might happen to his D800 and I guess he figured it's best to fix it himself.

No lets mend it without Nikons help ..that the purpose of the question.

The camera requires professional re-calibration. It's usually just an adjustment, but not something a user can do themselves. A local camera repair tech might be able to do it. Nikon's service dept. certainly could.

Aside from the slight "fine tuning" that users can do in some models, AF calibrations adjustments are mechanical in some, electronic (software) based in others. I have no idea what the D800 might use. Interesting that it appears to be pretty vulnerable to drops (and other hard "bumps"?), as several have reported.
