I agree, although our OP's stated interest is access to layers, so the point is to understand some of the limitations they may encounter, depending on their starting file format and their intended results. As an LR owner, there's no logical reason to change the OP's RAW processor (if applicable), whether they add PSE or not.

Elements has layers. I just tried with an NEF file before converting to 8 bit.

I think Paul is referring to the first step with raw editing: using ACR via LR since LR's ACR has more features than PSE's version of ACR... then do further work with layers in PSE.

A-OK? 😊

Thanks! I was missing the point.

Look at tools that (a) use 16-bit TIFF as input from LR (or DNG or PSD) and (b) they'll maintain 16-bit while providing access to layers and (c) support the ProPhoto RGB colorspace. The 8-bit issue really is exposed not by the layers specifically; but rather, in how well they maintain a range of colors, particularly in the gradients of blues and reds. Depending on the status of the image from LR and what you plan to work on in PSE, you may never encounter an issue.

Downloading other software candidates is free with a week-ish long trial period. Try one and see what you think during that trial period and move onto the next. Include PSE in the review testing.

Just to clarify. If you shoot JPEG, you are by definition working in 8 bits, so if the tools in PSE are 8-bit, no issue. BUT, if your camera is producing a 12 or 14 bit raw file and you choose to edit in PSE, where the majority of tools require you to convert to 8-bit, then there are edits where the difference can show such as posterization, especially in areas of the image where there is a continuous gradation in color or brightness. To quote Cambridge in Color:

“Posterization occurs when an image's apparent bit depth has been decreased so much that it has a visual impact. ... Stretching can be caused by techniques such as levels and curves in Photoshop, or by converting an image from one color space into another as part of color management.”

Not saying that you can’t produce excellent edits/images in PSE (as Linda has demonstrated), and I personally love the simplicity compared to the power of PS, but there are limitations.

I'm following this thread closely since I am considering adding PSE to my PP programs.
It looks like I have a lot more to consider before I make the move of adding PSE.
Thank you, Linda, and CHG_CANON for highlighting some of the details to consider beforehand.

I have always wanted to try Elements but have been unable to load it on my late model 2009 iMac i7 running Yosemite either using a dvd copy or downloading from the Apple store. I already have Aperture and the Apple photos app on the computer. I keep thinking I need to upgrade my computer and OS first but I just don't know what the problem is. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi 4OX,
You don't really need the newest version of PSE. I'm using PSE 15 supplemented with a program called Elements + ($12.00 one-time cost) with great results. A word of caution: Be sure to check which version of Windows (if you use that platform) is needed with the version of PSE you plan on purchasing. I'm using Windows 7 on my main work computer and it won't work with PSE 20. Take care & ...

This is an important point for our OP, if they shoot in RAW. For JPEG files, PSE provides an excellent set of tools as plug-in to their LR.

Hi All - does anyone have a couple of minutes to describe how to set up or use PSE 2020 as a plug-in to LR6 (stand alone)? i.e., the mechanics of doing it (setting it up) and what it can be used for? Can it be used to somehow "give" LR layers?
Thanks for any thoughts!
Kevin

I am a happy Elements user and have used it for a number of years. I am continually learning new things to do with it. And I like the fact that I can work in layers (as to the OP's point).

I always suggest getting Scott Kelby's Book "Photoshop Elements xx for the Digital Photographer" (the xx is the version of Elements). I also suggest getting an older version of the book because the material doesn't really change and the price is less.

Also download old editions of "Photoshop Elements Techniques" an e-magazine. There are things in the old magazines that you still can do with later editions of Elements. The download of this magazine is free.
