Many thanks to all who have provided their experiences and opinions. I am in no hurry to replace my Leica V-Lux 4 at this point as it still functions in a somewhat crippled mode. Plan to visit my local b&m after the new Fuji is available.

Tks again.

Sounds like a plan, Dean! I think after you get your hands on a Fuji X, you won't miss your wounded Leica!

A picture is worth 1000 words. Here are some pictures taken with a Sony RX10M4 (and a couple with an M3)

I have nothing to complain about. Oh, and I have printed uncropped or slightly cropped ISO 400 images to 24x36 and they look more than fine. I suspect I can print them bigger, though I haven't yet. As far as menus are concerned, it's only an issue for a brief time at the beginning. I use Nikon, and the Sony menus are different. But they make a lot of sense, and you can grab a bunch of "favorite" commands and aggregate them into a Favorites menu selection. After a few outings with the camera it was fine.

Is this hands on enough for you?

Hi, I have Fuji Xt1, XT2 & XH1. All very good cameras. Menus no more complicated than Nikon. Far less than Sony I'm told. The XT4 will likely be an excellent camera. If you want a great camera you could get the XT3 which is on offer for about $1200/$1400 with a lens I think. I have to 10-24 & 18-135 I may get the 50-230 Plastic XC lens which would complete my trio of Zooms. I also have a load of vintage MF glass that I use via adapters - from $20 to $150 - Industar, Helios, Nikon & Konica. I also have a 28mm KamLan lens from China. MF but a fantastic lens IMO.
As for the other cameras, I'm sure they're OK.
However, I would not hesitate to recommend Fuji. Well made lovely cameras. My fave being the XH1.
Good luck in your search. Enjoy what ever you choose.

Once again, thanks to all. Here is my plan:

I have several Canon bodies, mostly ff, and an assortment of L glass. As mentioned, my Leica is developing issues, and it is one of my favs because of portability, features, and results it produces. I want something similar to replace the Leica. Reviews I have read on the new version (5) of the Leica were not all so positive.

I have now ruled out the Fuji because I choose not to invest in another set of glass. My Canon L lens are excellent as most of you are aware. I have the trinity set, plus a couple third party units. Not wanting for good glass.

So, I am now down to the Sony and Nikon versions. My local b&m is good to deal with, as locals are aware, and I will pop in soon and ck out these two boxes. My Leica is still shooting, somewhat crippled, so in no rush to reach a con clusion in this matter.

Again, many tks for all the helpful input received.

An aside, I recall only ONE snarky, troll-type response in all of this. Our community deserves high accolades. Truly amazing!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

But do you have hands-on experience with any of the three cameras mentioned in my orig post?

I ordered the Sony RX10/IV and returned it. Everyone seems to love it, but I didn't. Too heavy to put in my pocket. Not impressed with zoom focus clarity. Too expensive. RAW not really raw. I was looking for a replacement for my old Nikon S9100 which was my travel camera to Greece. I am still looking for a replacement camera for my old Nikon S9100.

Will use my Canon 5D Miv with 24-105 and 2 primes (24mm and 55mm) for low light for my trip to Egypt -- if I get to go. My Samsung S10e phone camera is aweful. My old Samsung S5 takes much better photos, but doesn't solve the problem with telephoto functionality. Can't walk on water to get closer to get shoreline shots while boating down the Nile. Nikon S9100 has 18x zoom with acceptable zoom focus clarity.

I am too old -- lately referred to as "elderly" to shoot without a tripod with heavy telephoto lens.

I totally agree that it is expensive, and it is not appropriate for pockets unless you are a kangaroo - but you knew that before you purchased it but bought it anyway. It does produce a 12 bit raw file, even though it is a bit compressed, it is often better than the jpeg it produces. The lens is completely outstanding. Yes, is has some CA, but it is easily removed in post processing. And nothing comes close in autofocus accuracy or performance. Not even a Nikon D850.

Can you really find fault with the "focus clarity" in these two examples?

The sparrow above was taken with an RX10M3 that I borrowed from a Sony store in Manhattan, NY - and with very little experience with the camera, or any Sony camera for that matter. The Blue Heron was a grab shot - no time to compose. I startled it while hiking at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, my camera was out and on but at my side, and this bird exploded into flight, I raised the camera to my eye and managed to get several quick snaps - the camera tracked the bird even though there was a lot of foliage in the way - this was the only one where the bird was in the clear. It is uncropped.

If you wanted a replacement for the S9100, why didn't you consider the RX100 VII? While it may not zoom to 450mm, it's coverage from 24-200 F2.8-F4.5 is almost peerless. And it absolutely fits in your pocket. Though, it's not cheap. You can still get a second-hand S9100 for around $50. But there is no way that a 9 yr old $330 camera can hold a candle to most new cameras. The S9100 has sluggish AF performance, was not all that sharp at the long end, and was quite noisy over 640 ISO - at least from what I remember.

I'm thinking you may have had a bad copy of the Sony. The RX10M3, M4 that I borrowed, and the M4 that I eventually purchased - produced image quality equal to one another.

Tks. Choice narrowed to Sony and Nikon. Will drop by my local b&m and fiddle with each a bit.

If you have a Sony store near you, they will let you borrow one for the entire day. I did that with an RX10M3 which I liked very much, but waited a month to buy the M4, which had a better AF system.

Yeah Gene, my local is pretty good to deal with. Most of my stuff, pretty vast collection, has come from there since moving here in โ€˜01. Not bad to deal with. I like hands-on environment. Hard to look into your salesmanโ€™s eyes on the phone or comp screen. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž
