If the shutter runs out of gas...
Is there a " shutter actuation odometer" in the camera?....lol....is there a formula for approximating shutter actuations in a DSLR based on age?

Does anyone know how much it cost to repair/replace a shutter that dies. Can it be done? I guess it depends on what is cheaper the repair or a new camera. I mean if a person spends a couple grand or more on a high end camera would it be cheaper to have the shutter repaired/replaced if possible. I figure if the camera is 500.00 or less new then i would guess it would not be worth it. I would expect this repair would be up round this amount. Does anyone know am I in the ball park? I was reading about shutter life/actuation's and these questions came to mind. Just curious :)

I use precision camera in Enfield CT
http://www.precisioncamera.com/ you can go to their website describe your problem and the will give you a quote for repairs. They will repair or replace your shutter clean lube and adjust your camera (CLA) its not as costly as most think. It don't cost any thing for asking. I sent my sisters point and shoot cost $62. to bring back to new condition (New lens and ccd). My nikkor lens $120. brought back to new condition after I droped it (New front lens, filter mount & CLA.) Save me over $600. Good luck

Just to add Precision camera isn't a camera store. They only provide service and repair
Worrying about this is like worrying about how many heartbeats does your heart have before it ticks the last one. I have worn out cameras even nikons and leicas and currently use an old Nikon D 50 I can shoot a 1000 photos in a day and can average up to 300 frames in a hour. I have ran over 90,000 photos on my computer and not counting the times I test my camera and erase shots trying things out This has happen in less than two years. Get you a camera and take photos for fun counting shutter clicks is for bean counters or people with phobias, get over it. i buy used cameras and never had one die because I clicked the last ten shutter counts. I am not a rank amatuer.

what kind of bird is that in your profile pic? looks like a cardinal or jay but i have never seen one in that color.
it is a female cardinal. They are not as colorful or vivid red as the males. As with most birds the males are more colorful. I took that last winter here in Michigan

I was just curious more than anything else. I was simply wondering if a person had a 2000.00 camera and they ran their shutter dead I would assume they would want to repair it instead of shelling out another 2K. So that led me to my next question...I wonder what that would cost on average? I shoot with a Nikon D200 I bought is used and I really like it. If I ever need to repair it I don't know if I would repair it or replace it I guess it would depend on what's out there and how far it is into the future. Just being a curious George
:)
This is out of left field, but if you have a relatively new camera, you might try simply shutting the camera off, removing the battery, and reinserting the battery. Sometimes the computer of a digital camera just gets confused somehow and stalls. It's worth trying before assuming that it's broken, and of course costs nothing.

First of all I would like to say thanks to all of the good input I received starting this topic it mostly was to gain knowledge and was just a curious notion, and so I learned a few things. There is nothing currently wrong with my camera again just a question I thought about asking. But as for pdwoodswood question, I did see somewhere in one of these forum topics a reply that listed a sight link that could give you your shutter actuations by providing them with your last file/pic taken. somewhere buried in the file is the shutter count and they are able to dig it out. Heres the strange part I just happened on this last night and clicked the link and it showed up and I submitted my last pic and it took about 30 sec. and it showed that I had 19255 clicks and I thought wow how cool. So I thought I would post it to answer woodswoods question. So I clicked on the link tonight again to double check it and it won't show up/ it is broken right now and has been for a couple hours so I am thinking thats weird...
anyways the link is
www.myshuttercount.com It worked last night. Anyone else used it before?
Is there an echo in here?

Use this website:
http://www.camerashuttercount.comI just tried it and it works...
Thank you very much Nikonian72.. I was trying earlier today to figure out how many I had used..
What brand and model? With most older film cameras a complete shutter replacement was not needed. Usually just replace the blades. Could still be pricy but usually worth it on a decent camera.
