The one thing not mentioned is the 7*** series cameras as well as the d500 are weatherproof. They are more rugged than the 5*** series. I had the 5500 and loved it. I moved to the 7200 and never looked back. There are so many advantages to the 7200 that it would take too long to list. Here is a good comparison online of the 5600 and the 7200...

I didn’t see where you also lost a lens due to the ocean visit. If you didn’t drop your camera in the water you might want to pack it in a ziplock bag with rice for a few days and see what happens. Make sure your battery is good and fully charged when you try the camera again.

You might look at a D7200. The reason I like it is that it has a built-in flash and two SD card holders. Good prices can be had too.

OMG I agree totally with your re the flippy display. It has allowed to me to take photos that I never would have been able to take. I had a D5300 and a Canon G7X MKII and lost them both in the wilderness slipping and the ice and dropping the other one in Horton Creek in Northern Lower Michigan. I have yet to replace either. I will sure view this recommendation.

I predict that as Nikon slowly moves away from the DSLR market they will next eliminate the 7xxx line and leave only the 5xx line for DX DSLR cameras. They appear to be putting all of their efforts into the Mirrorless technologies but are unfortunately still woefully behind the other players in this market. We have not seen any new designs in the DX lens arena for years from Nikon. The way I see it if you are set on staying with the DX format you have two choices, the D500 or the Z5 with the lens adaptor.

Get yourself a mint, used or refurbished D7200. Two card slots. Great camera. Should be able to get a great price.
If money is no object get yourself a D500.

There is no doubt about the coming of the mirrorless, the demise of the D7xxx series (production) in the next 3-5 years (maybe sooner), and the D3xxx and D5xxx series are supposedly already "done". I have both the D7100 and D7200 (and a D90), and they may outlive me (I hope not). In a couple to 3-4 years I may be ready for an upgrade and probably will go MILC, but for now I and many others can thoroughly enjoy the old mirror slappers, for less $$, and there is a huge array of fine old glass around.

Not too long ago I was where you are thinking about upgrades. I started out with a D3400. I wanted to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. I went with a used D7000 and only picked up the D3400 once in the following year. After using the D7000 for a couple of years I got comfortable using the more advanced D7000 and I just went whole hog (pun intended) and bought the D500. Awesome camera but expensive. It just isn't the initial cost either, there are other costs to consider. If you don't have a speedlite you will have to invest in that, the XQD card that the D500 uses alongside the SD card is expensive.
All that being said, I'm glad I just skipped the D7500 and went all the way to the D500. I'd be willing to bet if you end up with the 500, you will be a happy camper.

That would be my recommendation, as well. I gave my D3100body to my daughter and son-in-law after buying a virtually unused D7100 body. I love the camera and think the 7000s are worth a very close look.

You can't go wrong with the D 500, I had a similar situation and went from the 5300 to the D 500.
