Loss of AF on Nikon 7200

Hello All,

A few days ago the AF on my Nikon 7200 refused to work. It had worked fine the day before, but was no longer working. I tried turning it on and off, but no help. The only thing in the manual is how to turn it on and switch between AF and Manual focus.

It is possible, but highly unlikely, that I turned the focus ring while the camera was in AF mode. Does anyone have any ideas? Or is it time for a Nikon repair?

Thank you,
Daniel

I didn't think turning the focus ring while the camera is in AF mode would cause that. I'll be following this to read what others have to say. Good luck!

How does it go with a different lens?

Did you accidentally set up back button focus?

I have a 7200. I have turned the focus ring a few times and it never affected my camera. Did you accidentally turn the lens to manual focus? I use bb focus but before that one day my camera would not focus and I had an err message. I never did figure out what I did but pressing the shutter button fixed it and it hasn't happened again. Best I have. Good luck.

Have had it happen to me on my D7200. My case, accidentally hit the switch on the lens. Duh!

Look for that switch, try a different lens, try the full P mode. Try removing the lens and returning. Remove battery for 10 min

If all that fails, try a full camera reset, but save your settings on a SS card first so you can restore. If you get to this level of more drastic action, and it fixes it, but returns when you restore your saved settings, then you know it is a setting

Good luck

There is a M/AF switch on the front of the camera and the lens. Check BOTH.

I've had the connectors between lens and camera get a bit out of line on my 7200 and it would not AF until the lens was rotated just a tiny amount. (This has never happened with the same lens on my 7100.) Try rotating the lens just a bit; then, as per above suggestion, try a different lens.

Cleaning the contacts on the camera and lens might help.

All the above plus: check in Custom Setting Menu under aAutofocus to make sure shutter release half-depress is active for AF. If you are using BBF, likewise go to f4 and make sure AE-L/AF-L is set to "AF-ON." I have also had this happen inconsistently (in D7200) when the battery gets a little low.

Flick that little switch on the back on the right side...the one with the L and the . Sometimes mine gets kind of stuck in the middle of the L and the . see if that helps. :)

Check the AF / M switch on the front of the camera near where the lens mounts, bottom left when holding camera

Haven't had much time to try the suggestions, but I'm getting acquainted with the manual, and the program system. But, still no AF. Will have more time tomorrow to work on it longer. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Please check the AF/M switch first, you won't find an answer in the manual

The AF/M switch was the first thing that I checked. On both lens and camera. Then checked 3 other lenses. Then the battery out of the camera trick for 30 minutes. I must have some how triggered a change in the programing. I hate to think it may have to go to Nikon for repair, especially since Nikon is shutting down third party repair facilities.

Thanks to all for your ideas and suggestions. I will be working n this today since I have more time than yesterday.
