What is this phenomenon?

I took this picture from my back deck one February morning a few years ago and I've forgotten what the explanation for it was. I'm hoping a UHH meteorologist might explain it. I've never seen anything like it again. Thank you.

looks like what is called a mackerel sky.

I have seen this before, and I think it is where the cloud layer is at the same altitude of two jets who have interrupted the clouds and left contrails behind.

It is a mackerel sky. Usually when you see this type of cloud formation rain is just around the corner.

Not so unusual. I think the OP is referring to the three semicircular clear spots an what looks like a jet of clouds pointing into them.

With this kind of sky, the old tradition wisdom used to say: "The sheep is going to drink" meaning: We have better to expect a rain, soon.
