I'm hoping someone out there can tell me why a function in my custom settings menu doesn't appear to be working. It's in custom settings-b Metering/exposure-b4 Easy exposure compensation. When you select "On (Auto reset), then press OK it says "reset" so that when you use exposure compensation...say you put it at +1...and then shut the camera off and turn it back on it's supposed to automatically return to 0. I just watched Tony Northrup's tutorial and saw that that's the way it's supposed to work. I'm sure there's probably some other adjustment that I have to make , but ???. Everything else works great, so I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong and not the camera. I also noticed that my exposure compensation shows up in numerical figures on the bottom right corner of the bar of my LV screen and in Tony's tutorial it shows up on graph form (which I would prefer) on the right side of the screen.
If you shoot in RAW there is bascially no need for exposure compensation. I'm sure this will start an arguement.

Did Tony illustrated that on a D500?

What does the D-500 manual say about that setting.

Not to argue the point, but I've noticed that the D500 tends to blow highlights on a bright day & could sometimes use a little compensation. I think Steve Perry mentions this also in one of his videos, but i may be wrong here.. I only shoot raw and don't see this on the other Nikons I have or have had. If it's over exposed, there's no getting anything back out of it raw or not. There is a highlight metering mode on the camera that may cure this.
My question is how do I set up my camera so that when I shut it off, and it's been left in +/- exp. compensation, when I turn it back on it's at 0. That is my ONLY question here.

And you use the easy exposure compensation? That is you don't press the +/- button when you turn the dial to set the EC?
I just set mine to auto reset. I added some compensation, shut the camera off, turned it back on, and the added compensation was still there. But Steve Perry's book on Nikon metering systems also says it will re-set when the camera goes on standby or is turned off.
So I'm at a loss.
From Nikon:
Easy Exposure Compensation
"Exposure compensation is set by rotating one of the command dials (see note below). The setting selected using the command dial is reset when the camera turns off or the standby timer expires (exposure compensation settings selected using the +/- button are not reset).

My Nikon doesn't have those features. I don't use the EC so it doesn't matter but if I do I think the easy compensation is nice but it reset when the meter time out too? That's not good.

Easy compensation resets ... I think that's what is supposed to make it easy.
Using the +/- button doesn't reset.
I use the +/- button because I would forget that something is resetting automatically.
