Rita, I've been using Irfanview for almost 20 years. It's free and easy to use.

The answer depends on what kind of device you are going to do the editing on and your computer savvy. There are many many choices out there in editing land. Most devices have simple editing tools built into them. Try them out and plan to learn a lot more than you know right now about computers. You’ll need that knowledge if you want to advance with editing photos.

Hi friends....I am looking for a very basic/intro editing program. I'm not opposed to 'free' for the moment to get a feel for how much I would use certain elements. I have tried a couple free programs in the past, but although the editing was relatively simple and successful, I could not open the newly edited photo on my computer. It all gets quite frustrating after awhile. Any suggestions?

As other have pointed out - I would go with Faststone. easy learning curve and is pretty comprehensive depending on how involved you want to be with your editing. For basic adjustments like brightness/contrast/denoise and sharpening, you can't beat it. If you want to get into color balancing or gamma adjustments, it will do that too.

And the price (FREE) is right too. Keep in mind, it is a Windows only product. MAC users have to go elsewhere.

If you have an Olympus; they have their own software called Olympus Workspace and it works well.

Check out DXO Photo Lab 3. It has presets (that apply basic edits for you) , and one of these may be all of the editing you need to do. Download a trial version and see if you like it.

Adobe Photoshop Express is a free editor from Adobe that is easy to learn and pretty powerful. Also I have purchased many other editors and the one that does the most with the lowest learning curve IMHO is Luminar.

I have been using Faststone for years, very happy with it, and latest version is great with shadow and hi-light sliders. About the only thing missing is a perspective edit. Give it a try.

I would suggest that neither of these programs are simple or basic.

Have a play with Picasa which can be downloaded free here:-

I'm not sure what operating system you're using, but both Windows and Mac have basic editing programs that will allow you to make simple adjustments such as cropping, brilliance, saturation, etc. It's amazing just how much you can adjust using the editing programs that come with the O.S.

that has been my discovery as well. It's a very good and easy place to begin for those of us who are slow-learners....and this will give you a better insight as to where to venture next in your studies. There are so many to choose from and it's overwhelming.

AMS Software has a very good deal at 70% off for its Photo Studio Gold App. Also includes its Collage Generator app and access to over 1000 extra templates of usage ideas. All for less than $25.00.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are not what I’d call beginner programs. Picasa is where I started; it’s uncomplicated and intuitive. and intuitive.

But has been retired and unsupported for some time now.
