But, but, presidential news conferences would not quite be the same without all those CLICKS(and flashes), no? Imagine no click sounds - that would sound strange!

The only camera that makes an artificial shutter click sound would be a smartphone (which can be muted), but in almost all cases the mechanical shutter is the only remaining moving part. Now there may also be some DSLRs which also add the mirror slap noise.

Here's some sounds you no longer hear at press conferences - a film MOTOR DRIVE....remember those? So you had SLAP - CLICK - WHIRRRR....repeatedly as the flashes went off!

Also in many newsrooms you had the clickety clack of the TELEX newswires in the background...that sound became so cliche that many comedy skits included a mechanical typewriter prop to simulate the effect. We become so accustomed to certain noises that in their absence it seems strange, but this gradually fades generation to generation....yes the press conference of the future will be totally silent as news is told telepathically....
But, but, presidential news conferences would not ... (show quote)

ESP to the Clickety-clack of the gnashing teeth!

I'll add my two cents.

Those noisy cameras are probably mechanical DSLRs, and they make noise. Setting them to Quiet Mode wouldn't make much of a difference. That just part of modern life. It's even worse at night, when all that noise is accompanied by flashes.

I was watching the Presidents televised meeting today with the Airline heads and could NOT believe how the click-clickey-click actually dominated the atmosphere of the room.
Totally obnoxious..........
WHY do cameras need a resounding C L I C K ?
They're electronically operated aren't they ?
Is that C L I C K created in the camera artificially ?
Taking wildlife picture would certainly welcome a little quietness .

Todays camera are pretty quiet compared to a lot of previous cameras . The mirror slap on my pentax 645 nii coupled with the film advance motor is loudest I have ever heard but didn't seem to bother us at the time .

Could be worse. There was a short time in which claque boards were used in videoing (ok, filming) the speeches!

I don't think anyone has EVER complained about my camera's shutter noise.

Of course, the artillery, tanks, rifles, jets, PA systems and dance bands usually had something to do with that, I am sure.

One famous female singer, said she loved the sound of camera clicks sounds. It meant that she was still relevant as a famous singer. Another famous female country and western singer, pre-SLR era. Said, she collected old flash bulbs, after the photographers took pictures of her. Knowing each spent bulb was a photo of her. Shutter clicks may have some effects on wildlife photography, because animals generally have better hearing than humans.

Well, Soviet-block built SLR's were the loudest back in the day, much louder than anything sold new today.

Many PRO'S are still using PRO camera's like Canon and Nikon. Newer mirrorless camera's have REAL silent modes. Until the transition is complete you will continue to hear that noise.
Besides, what you don't understand is that the appearance of LOTS of camera's going off lends itself to the IMPORTANCE of the meeting, if you hear no noise you would wonder if the PRESS was invited or worse, maybe this was NOT an IMPORTANT meeting.

That is actually a very good point.

Perhaps poster is bothered now but not before is that is a difference one one camera before (his) and a small army of cameras now (press conference) and don’t forget the flashes.

Today cameras can be totally silence but many still have mechanical shutter and they do make noise. No the click are not created artificially. On some P&S they do but not with professional cameras.
Why are you bothered now and not before. For many decades cameras have been noisy.

[quote=rehess]Was your camera "rangefinder" {lens not removable - viewfinder not through the lens}.
They were much much quieter .... but not nearly as flexible back then.[/quote===================================================================
Of course it was a rangefinder and was mfg in the Fourties. I do not think that "view thru the lens" cameras were on the market back then.

I think with the transition from film to digital fewer photographers use flash. The cameras are also quieter than those motor driven SLR of the film days. I don't think the number of photographers increases either.

Just ignore it. Since it's the media, it's just fake noise... :-)
