Is That a Possum?

How could they mess up naming this little critter? 
Three city kids were visiting their relatives in the country. As they walked through the woods, they saw a small animal under some shrubs.
"Hey, look at that. I think it's a rat," said Tom.
"No, that's not a rat. We have them in our apartment, so I know rats," Joe replied.
"I bet it's a raccoon," Bill suggested.
"No. Raccoons have that black mask over their eyes, " said Tom.
Then Joe shouted, "Oh, possum!"

In 2012 a baby opossum got into our house through a doggy door and barricaded himself under our recliner couch. Of course it was on a Sunday and Animal Control took the day off. Four police cars responded. The officers lifted the very heavy couch and using our dog pen fence, hearded it out the doggy door. Unfortunately, the next morning we found it dead in our swimming pool skimmer. One thing I learned about opossums is that half their body length is very sharp teeth. They are cute at a distance, but they are not to be toyed with.

One evening, long ago, in a little town near Lubbock, TX, I was out with a flashlight looking for what I had assumed was a juvenile rattlesnake in my yard. (got to protect the puppies) With flashlight in one hand and a hoe in the other I followed the medium quiet hiss...... until I came face to face with.... the face you see in the previous post, sans cage. Most people get a start when they spot a rattlesnake, but since I was looking for a snake, my little back yard opossum rated a FAR bigger fright.

Had the same thing happen to me when I heard a commotion from our barn. It seems a possum had gotten in thru the cat door and after killing a chicken, was eating it in a corner when I investigated the noise. You are right, when they show their teeth you realize how big a mouth they have. A bullet took care of my problem!!

I call it "High speed lead poisoning" so the tree huggers don't get upset....
