Not wanting to burden fellow Hoggers with a lens recommendation, again, I did some research on the 55-300 VR (I know I'm leaving out most of the alphabet of specs). It's relatively cheap for its quality and I could probably afford it next month. I watched several Youtube reviews and I've got to admit there's something I don't understand.
What the &*$* is the fascination with unboxing? One clown spent 5 minutes of a less than 10 minute video taking the lens out of the box. Que????? Many reviews listed unboxing in the title. I just don't get it.
Finally, in disgust, I went to Ken Rockwell. He confirmed what I'd surmised from photos in the Youtube vids. The lens is a bit soft at full extension, but he added the final nail in the coffin of that lens selection, slow autofocus. I decided to adhere to his recommendation for the 70-300 VR. I'll have to save a little longer, but I think it's the better lens.
Anyone who uses either lens is more than welcome to reply.

During any video, I skip over the unboxing section as that is time that you will NEVER get back.
However, there are useful instructions and how-to-do-it on Utube that are very useful.
For example, my Toyota Highlander Owners Manual has faulty instructions on how to reset your maintenance monitor.
My local mechanic "forgets" to reset the maintenance reminder, so I do it when I get home.
I found a Youtube video that gave step by step directions that worked great.
I typed up the instructions, printed them out and inserted them into the owner's manual for future use.
I find that a lot of cars have a lot of different and mystic ways of resetting that frustrating (yet helpful) maintenance reminder.

I happened to be on KEH just now. They had the 70-300 excellent condition with caps and hood for $235.

Was it the FF copy?

When I unbox something new, I make a sketch of how it was packed. I want to know how it was originally packed. I save up the sketch in the box.

You don't seem to understand the enduring value of "unboxing" a lens properly . . .

I suspect that the unboxers are faddish types who want to make videos more than they want to use lenses, cameras, etc. They probably rent the items, make the videos, and return the items. If they were real photo enthusiasts, they would most likely include more details on the items, and examples of the images the items produced. I find the unboxing videos to be annoying. When I view gear videos, I want details, and examples of images, because I am considering the gear for purchase, and want to compare it against other items being considered. I do rely upon Ken Rockwell more than upon unboxers. Matt Granger also provides good information, with good examples. The unboxers who do buy the gear are-I suspect-of the ‘keep up with / ahead of the Joneses’ type who want to be the first, or next, to have some particular item and who thus make the unboxing videos to brag about having the items shown. Using the items is of little interest to these folks. They need to be seen to possess the items...to rub their egos, and earn the envy of similar folk.

Dustin Abbott and Christopher Frost IMO provide excellent user reviews. Ken Rockwell also. I own two 70-300 kit lenses. One is an old af style. The other is the new af-p style. Both non-vr. Both are IMO sharp for my uses especially the af-p. I very seldom use them since I usually shoot from 17-75mm 90% of the time. The 70-300 to me is too long at the wide end. I prefer my 18-200 VC if I need something longer.

Most lenses, with a wide zoom range, are less than stellar when fully zoomed in. Best of luck.

I skipped through the unboxing part in hopes there was some useful info in there somewhere.
For that little trouble I did get one insight. Use the lens hood, with examples of how it improves the image.
When I get the lens I'll buy from KEH most likely. Maybe I could do an unbubblewrapping video. KEH packs their stuff like it's going to make a landing on Mars as Spirit and Opportunity did (and I appreciate their efforts).

Not sure if you are talking about Canon, Nikon, or some other manufacturer, and there are many Nikon 70mm-300mm lens available, but I can highly recommend the Nikon 70mm-300mm AF-P lens (both DX and FX). The lens is light, focuses very quickly and silently, and is relatively inexpensive new. The FX lens in particular is a great lens, with good build quality and sharp corner to corner, even when extended out to 300mm.

If I sketched it it wouldn’t help. No drawing talent. I would take a picture.

So the unboxing mystery. It is a new and booming way to gather followers for you business.
Social networking and youtube presence is being used by savvy people to get followers.
Youtube, Instagram, Facebook are full of self promoters. A clever way to get attention
and some business.
And my difference with a lot of folks here is Ken Rockwell. His reviews and recommendations
are straight information. If you are buying a lens listen to his frank opinion.
He said he was fascinated with this Sony RX10 III 24-600mm bridge camera and
couldnt put it down it was so good. I bought one and it is one of my favorite purchases
of all time. He was the go to Nikon guy for years. He was very critical of the Nikon 800
and thought competing Canon was a better camera. This was honesty at it's best.
Their seems to be a lot of people who hate Ken. I don't know why. He is arrogant at times.
I look up anything lens etc that interest me and check Ken's take.
As for zoom telephoto lens this is a hard purchase depending on what you really
want to do and what you shoot.

With YouTube videos, the longer the video, the more ads can be inserted. The ads generate revenue for the video owner. So the longer the video the more money they make. Simple economics.

Nothing wrong with making money.

Rick,

They spend some much time unboxing because it is topping out their skill set I expect.

Unboxing - surely one of the most pointless activities on this planet?

I think some people get a kick out of watching others unbox stuff. Particularly when it concerns Apple products and their fancy packaging. Sometimes what comes in the box is of interest to me, but definitely not the unboxing procedure itself.
