Thanks. I'll have to remember all that when/if I get into Apple.
I have been considering it because my wife has a laptop and it integrates well with her iPhone. However, my desire to switch has hit a setback recently. She installed an update a week ago and now her laptop will not drive our printer. "Backend failure", whatever that is. She has spent a couple hours on the phone with apple without resolution. The printer works from the phone and from all the Win10 machines. Tried uninstalling the printer, deleting all the print drivers and reinstalling the OS. No joy.

For now I'll stick with my Win10. When I have printer problems I can usually solve them in 5 minutes.

Most likely a printer driver issue that the printer mfg needs to release an update for. I have never run into printer driver issues on my iMacs...but often get driver updates from Epson.

Take a look at GoodSync. You can schedule what you want to backup to go where you want it to go when you want it done. It keeps in touch with the files being backed up and records the changes made - that is both added files, deleted files and altered files.

I have a 27" iMac and I use Google One for backup(It also works for Windows). This service sends my data through a desktop app called "Google Backup and Sync", which updates immediately when changes are made on my computer(s). Always runs in the background. Once you do a backup there is very little demand on my computers resources. It separates photos and other files. It backs up my computers (I have 3 MACs being backed up in the cloud, and there is a different file tree for each one. it has a "Drive" for files you select for upload into cloud storage. You can try it for free on your Windows machine. I think you get 15Gb for free so you can give it a try. I get 2Tb for $10/month. Since I have MACs I also use SuperDuper and Time Machine for local hard drive storage and iCloud.

Is there a software package (Windows 10) that will allow me to backup my work as I make changes during the day? I'd probably use a 1 or 2 TB WD drive. (I always turn my PC off at the end of the day before leaving the studio).

Presently I'm using Acronis 2019 (which I don't like) and backup my whole PC every Saturday. I have a 500gb SSD (which only has 64GB free) and 2-1 TB drives. Should I consider upping the SSD to a 1TB drive and then use my 500 as a Scratch Disk? To do so I'd have to swap my 2-1TB drives for a single 2TB drive.

Somewhere I saw that Apple has software that backs up as you go....don't remember the name, and was wondering if there was something similar for the PC.

I don't have a Mac so I can't compare, but Windows 10 has a backup utility named "File History" that appears to be similar to Apple's Time Machine. You can find it at Start -> Settings ->Update & Security -> Backup.

It lets you select the folders that you want to backup, how often you want to do the backup and how long to keep the backups.

To answer your Win 10 question specifically there is a built in backup using File History that can be set to backup every few minutes. No need for third party software. It will work with a plugged in external drive just fine.

OK, so I read your recommendations (a lot of stuff about TimeMachine...but as I stated I have a PC, not a Mac). I looked into GoodSync and they have a special which ends today so I might buy it.

My question is: Right now I'm using Excel to get my month-end deposit ready to take to the bank. Will GoodSync automatically back up this file? If I retouch (hate the word Edit...to me editing is culling) a file will this file be backed up? So when the day is done, I will have the worksheets I produced backed up as well as the 13 files I retouched and they will be stored on my external drive so that if my PC goes down I will have the recent files I worked on. Note: I also have Backblaze.

If you use Office365 for Excel you can turn on AutoSave and it will save every change you make to One Drive (ie. cloud storage) plus you can have it on your PC by having it in folder that syncs with One Drive and you can have it backed up to your external drive every few minutes. With File History you can roll back to a previous version of your file if you need to. Absolutely no need to spend money on third party software. You already paid for what you need.

"Will GoodSync automatically back up this file?"

Synchronization software, including GoodSync, works on the principle of comparing the files on your backup drive to your working drives. It then replaces old, out of date copies on the backup with the newer version. The goal is NOT to have a copy of everything you've ever done, but to have a copy of what you keep current on you working drives. GoodSync has the option of keeping the deletions on the backup for awhile in case you screw up.

I'm not sure GoodSync runs "live". I only run it when I feel the need. It has lots of options. Other synchronization software includes SyncToy (from Microsoft) and SyncBack.

I use OneDrive, comes with W10. As I have Office 365 personal that comes with 1TB of storage, you can buy more, and practically all my files are sync'd . Every thing is saved to Onedrive as I work ,
I've used it for years, never had any issue. I buy a new computer, sign on, everything is there, need something away from home/work sign on via a browser and I can get what I need. When I import to LR
I convert to DNG so even my photos are available.

Use File History built into Windows 10. Very easy to set up.
Doesn't anyone use the two different backup programs built into Win 10. The both work very well. File History backs up every hour and retains every version of the file for however long you have specified in setup. Win 7 backs up whatever drive(s) you specify and includes a system image, if you wish.

That will certainly work, but you may grow to hate autosave as it saves your errors immediately - you’ll learn where the “undo/back” button is very quickly if it’s available in you application.

Regarding the question about previous versions of Excel, history (if implemented) can restore previous versions, but as I recall, there is a limit to the number and the oldest versions may “roll off” and you may lose granularity. Instead, if a precise history is important, you might chose instead to “save as” and append a date or a rev # to the file name each time you create a new version.

I use SyncBackSE. Makes a copy as you make changes(some setup required). Similar to goodsync.
