Nikon 200-500mm lens problem

I remember a posting a while back about a problem using Nikon's 200-500mm lens with a D850. I wasn't able to find the original post so I wanted to repost and see if there was any resolution to this problem.

I am also having a problem with this lens. If I try to shoot with either continuous release mode, the camera freezes up with an ERR message and has to be power cycled to clear it. This happens with both a D850 and a D7100. Oddly, if I keep the aperture at 5.6 it works properly. If I keep the zoom to around 250mm or less it works properly at any aperture. Nikon tech support was worthless so I'm about to send the lens in for repair but I wanted to check in here just in case.

Thanks. Sadly these posts offer no help and I didn't see the one I was remembering.

Sounds like the ribbon cable or connector to the aperture is defective. You need professional repair.

I recall the post but also cannot locate it. The OP wrote that several attempts by Nikon were required to replicate and resolve this typically intermittent problem. When it has occurred with my D500, a single press on the shutter cleared the message and the problem.

Loose mount (camera or lens) dirty connection pins on either or both. You don't mention a T/C, but I have one that will sometimes break the connection mementarily when using with a big old heavy lens, handheld...something similar could be happening. If it happens on tripod, then harder to say, but handheld, you would expose a loose connection due to handling, movement, pressure changes to the mounts of the big lens and camera body while holding. Good luck in finding the culprit.

That lens has had a problem stopping during a multi exposure sequence and throwing a ERR message. I sent mine into Nikon 4 times before they fixed it. It was a problem that did not happen every time so it took Nikon time to get it right.

Nikon may ask you to send the cameras too with the lens so they can accurately diagnose the issue. I would clean the contacts on the lens and the cameras where the lens mates to the camera body if you have not already done that. If you have a friend who has a Nikon DSLR use that camera to see if the problem is resolved or continues.

It is not the camera, it is the lens. This lens has had a proud history except for this issue. I have had the lens on three different bodies and it did the same thing on all three. It does not do it every time, that is what makes it so maddening. Intermittent problems are always the hardest to fix because they sometimes don't act up when you want them to. But, it is definitely the lens.

Isn't the 200-500 a fixed f/5.6 constant aperture? I just purchased one and on the few outing I've been on I've not had a problem. I shoot manual mode and set the aperture to 5.6.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's the lens as it happens on both the bodies I've tried it on. Luckily (?) the problem is not intermittent for me. It happens every time! Very frustrating.
