Okay, I've learned my lesson and I won't complain about the damp cold grey days for when I looked out the window it had snowed overnight. Oh how I wish the damp cold grey day was back now!

These images are best viewed when "downloaded and clicked on to enlarge". I hope that you enjoy seeing them.

I was fortunate enough to tour a state-of-the-art true "green machine" set of greenhouses. The technology and attention to care and detail were beyond anything that I could have ever imagined. In addition to scientific control of water, temperature, ventilation and other elements the most amazing thing to me was how they pollinate the plants.

They use a special species of bees that are brought in by beekeepers and they turn them loose in there. The bees get busy doing their business going about the blossoms. The beekeepers then return with the scent of the Queen Bee and they all come into the container on que.

I never knew that I would find tomatoes and cucumbers so interesting....and delicious.

Well now, you are making me impatient for spring! In any event will be starting seeds next month on heat pad & under grow lights. So not to long. Guess I should start getting organized. Thanks for the prod.

That is something. I wonder what kind of bees they use? Honeybees don't pollinate tomatoes. I think bumblebees do.

Mike, here's a link to the greenhouses that I visited. Knowing that you have a love of botany I thought that you would enjoy reading about it.

https://cathisgarden.com/greenhouse-at-el-dorado-royale-riviera-maya-mexico/

I was told that the bees were very, very aggressive and that no one was allowed in the grow houses during the times that the bees were loose inside the buildings.

By the way, this facility was in Mexico and is owned and operated by Karisma. They have seven all inclusive resorts and they grow all of their own produce.

What's amazing is the disparity between the resort operations and the local inhabitants. It's as though one is living in a future universe while the other is stuck in the dark ages.

Mike...for what it's worth, the Better Half and I will be going back there in May. We visit twice a year so I'll get more details then.

If I don't get all the info this time, no worry for we have 250-weeks of pre-paid vacation time at the resort so eventually I know all there is to know....assuming that I don't end up face down at the pool bar. That does tend to happen at times.

Hmm, not bumblebees, then. Thanks for the link. I have never been involved in any greenhouse growing, but it is something I have always wanted to do.

I found this video:

OK, now all I can think about are maters and cukes and how much I want a salad. Seriously, Sippy, this is a wonderful post with fascinating information and beautiful images. I've also enjoyed the back and forth between you and Mike. Most interesting!

Thanks, Donna. I'm truly having an enjoyable time on this forum. I share on some of the others too and I've found all of the UHH guys and gals to be fabulous and all eager to share and be responsive to others.

Mike attached a link to the greenhouses that I visited and here's a 3-minute video of it in more detail.

For anyone wanting to enjoy a gourmet all inclusive experience, they would be hard pressed to find anywhere better. The meals are beyond compare and services like none other and all of the drinks are top-shelf brands (Oh Yeah). My Better Half and I have been going to their resorts for over ten years now and we still have 250 weeks to use as we wish and/or to pass down to others.

Donna, I recently retired as a mechanical system designer and technical consultant specializing in highly controlled environments such as surgeries and pharmaceuticals. I recently consulted on a massive indoor grow-house which was quite amazing and I learned a lot consulting.

Here's the big-bang. The hottest thing going on indoor grow-houses now is "Medical Marijuana" which is, as you can imagine, quite a cash-crop.

So...if you ever want to build one for yourself someday, I can be of help to you!
