Does any of you guys have a similar experience?
Some years ago I bought a Neewer battery grip for my D5300 and it works & fits just fine. So when I got the D500, Neewer my first choice for a second battery grip.
I bought it and it works just fine - but it looks like it should be a better fit on another camera. Se pictures.
Do you have a similar experience? If NOT, kindly tell me what grip you have.
- Please don’t tell me to buy the Nikon one, I can’t afford it!
Maybe it fits more than one model?
I certainly will not tell you what to buy, and I know the Nikon grip is very pricey. But when you buy a 3rd party product at a fraction of the cost because you can't/don't want to spend the money for the OEM version, compromises in quality are bound to happen. Did you read reviews or compare this grip to other 3rd party versions for your camera? Do all the controls and features work correctly? Are you sure its mounted correctly? Personally, I would not find such poor quality fit and finish acceptable.
You are absolutely correct in your view regarding 3rd party v OEM.
No, stupidly I failed reading reviews on the Neewer grip.
Yes, the functionality is flawless. But the fitting to the camera body... 🤮
If it works don't worry about it. 3rd party items often are like that. It may fail earlier, too. But it is what we pay for when we go that route; which I often do.
Vello Brand is another third party grip, that you can buy from B&H. I personally don't need a battery grip. One battery in the camera is sufficient for me. I do carry an extra charged battery when I travel though. There are some Nikon DSLRs, that Nikon does not make a battery grip for. Therefore, if you want a battery grip, you have no choice, but to buy a third party manufacturer. As, to which aftermarket battery grip is better between Neewer and Vello Brand names. I don't know? I don't need any of the two.

I would imagine that observers wouldn't care.

I have a Vello grip for my Canon.

It's not an evening dress that supposed to look nice. It's a battery grip, it works fine, thats important part, i think.

Yes, function has priority.
I have Vello grips for my D810 and D7200. They both fit and perform properly. I saw one on a friends D800e thats why i went with them. If i had to buy the Nikon grip, i would have to do without.
They might not last as long and i would not trust them on a tripod. But they work. And they are inexpensive.
I was lucky. My D500 came with a free grip.
