P is the most basic as the camera does everything. M requires you to set everything according to the image you want.

Some people believe one is not a photographer until one exclusively uses the "M" mode.
I believe a good photographer knows how each mode works, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and when it is most beneficial to use them.

Not quite true because usually user sets ISO. Even in ‘P’ mode my Pentax camera allows me to over-ride the settings if they won’t work for my setting.
