International space station and the moon

Just saw a photo of the International space station crossing the moon. In the picture the “space station “ was a series of dots. I thought the ISS had a steady light, not flashing. Shouldn’t it a solid streak of light instead of dots?

No. I have seen the ISS showing various light going on and off.
AS a silhouette with the moon in the back backgrouund, I doubt they
would be bright enough to be seen.

Our local news usually gives us a heads when it's coming into our area. They say to look for a solid moving light and not blinking, like a satellite. This picture kind of reminds of an airplane when it flying through my sight line when I'm doing timed exposures at night.

I believe the image you are talking about is a composite that shows the ISS as it transitions the moon, it is not a single shot, but many shots merged resulting in the ISS shown at each location as time moves by.

Bingo!

You can find info about locating the space station online - somewhere.

I guess I have the links -

Speaking of dots or flashing lights, you may have noticed that LEDs show up as flashing lights when seen on a monitor.

NASA will send e-mails when the ISS will be flying over your location.

I use an app called sky guide that shows where and when for the ISS plus many other orbiting objects.

Do satellites have blinking lights? If so why? Seems that they would be energy drains and they don’t need them to keep from running into each other.

According to my local news they do. However, if their facts are as accurate as the weather reports, the lights probably stay on.

I’ve also heard they stay on, but they only seem to be intermittent due to rotation.

...I believe that might be a reflection of the sun off the space station. If you download and magnify, you can see the shape of the "light" change as well as brighten then darken as it moves across the frame.

Look it up. There is a web page that tells you every day where, when and how long you can see it in your neighborhood.
