I have the AF set to S and I do not keep my finger on the AI button when I recompose. All I have to do is move the camera and it changes. I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you.

Make sure Custom Setting A6 is "OFF" (set to AF-On Only.)

Silly question, but are you remembering to take your finger off the AF-On button before recomposing?

Other than that, double check that AF only is selected.

The only thing I can add might be to turn off the camera, take out the battery, insert a different battery, turn on the camera, hit reset factory settings and then set AF ON and other custom settings.

I had the same problem with my d7500. I found by going in to the menu Pencil icon "a Autofocus" scroll down to "a6 AF activation" and turn AF activation off. This worked for me after setting conventional back button focus. It seemed like the shutter button was still active. Good luck.

In July of last year, my d7000 was stolen. I finally got a replacement, a d7500, from my insurance company this month. When I had the d7000, I was able to set up back button focus with no problem. When I set up the new camera for back button focus, I ran into a problem. When I focus on a single point, and then adjust for composition, it refocuses just slightly. When this happens, I lose the focus point and many times, I cannot engage the shutter button. I have it set on AF-ON, AF-C and AF-ON only. Even just moving the camera, I can hear the focusing mechanism move slightly. What am I missing or doing wrong?

This may be off base as I'm not a Nikon owner, but might engaging a Focus Lock with the other setting help? I found BBF on my Pentaxs so confusing I don't use it. I focus lock with my shutter release or FL button. But then I don't shoot BIFs.

With Nikon BBF, as soon as you take your finger off the AF-ON button the focus is locked. For those that use it, I don't, the idea is that as long as you hold the button you are focusing and letting go stops it.
