I can see now that this is the USS Midway. My first impression, however, was of a smallish vessel with a distracting skyline behind it. I think the tight crop has created this impression. The ship is / was a living thing and it needs room to breath. I also think it could do without the coloured lights. I know they are part of the attraction but the image might be better without them.

Good exposure for a night shot! 👍 But I think the fence in the foreground is very distracting. Suggest next time walk to the fence an shot over it. Thanks for posting.

My brother was stationed on the Midway back in the late 50s, early 60s. I was living in Southern California when they first opened the Midway for tours. I told him he should come down and we could take the tour of his out ship. He wasn't too interested.

Thanks for the suggestions. The photo is cropped height wise not length wise. I was using a 28 mm lens and where I was standing was the only place I could get the entire ship in view. Standing any closer to the fence would have cut off a large part of the ship. Standing further away would have diminished any detail I got. I have it printed out at 10by20 and it shows it's true size better. The small resolution file I put up doesn't. I asked the museum if they could turn off all the lights while I took my photo but you can guess what they said.

Fixed the sky, a little larger resolution. This was a 15 second exposure and the wind was blowing the string of lights around. I asked God if He could hold up on the wind a minute, but you can guess what He said.

Given the size of the ship and all other uncooperative agencies it is a much better result than first thought.

Nah. I like it better with the water, jetty and rail. It gives a bit more context to the image.

Yes, I really like the second version of the photo better. The extra resolution helps a lot on my screen. Thanks for explaining the situation.
By the way, the aircraft on the elevator is a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk attack aircraft. Hard to say for sure, but it looks like there are some Grumman F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft on the flight deck. It was a great airplane. I was a member of the fleet introduction team for the F-14, and was one of the first 3 maintenance control officers qualified on that plane in VF-124, the NAS Miramar based training squadron. It was an honor and a great tour of duty.

Not better at all in my opinion. The fence added no negatives to the photo and actually was a leading line to part of the ship. The first photo was beautiful.
