Contact Canon, if for nothing else to give them a heads up. If you buy from Canon do you get a serial number on the receipt?
I'm going to contact them tomorrow, I don't know if you get the serial# on the receipt of small items.

LI batteries can exhibit a failure mode where the internal materials are swelling. Can be leadibgto a short and over heating and fire. I'd say bag it. It's not worth the risk
Do not try to glue it back. Lithium batteries out gas when overcharged a very dangerous condition. Dispose of carefully!

If you bought your 5D IV there I would be a bit disturbed about declining to take care of the battery.

It is not clear (yet) whether the battery was swollen from overcharging or whether the back cap (where there are no terminals) simply became unglued - waiting for the OP to clarify. iF the battery was actually swollen from outgassing due to overcharging, it’s the CHARGER that needs to be addressed. In that case, the battery is just a symptom of a defective charger, and replacing the battery with a new one will just duplicate the experience with the next battery. If the OP had some basic test equipment such as a DVM, he could monitor the charging voltage and current - everything else is just speculation.

Has anyone else ever have a canon LP6N battery come apart? It looks like the case came apart at the seam around the battery which is only about 4 months old. I tried to snap it together with no luck, it just comes apart as soon as I release pressure. Should I try to glue it or contact Canon?
Thanks
Tom
If you didn't get it from a reputable dealer, it could be the knock-off fakes. I've never had a real one come apart.
It's for this reason that I don't buy any "discount" products, of which there's one for almost every product out there.

Years ago a UPS 747 cargo plane went down due to a lithium battery fire. It was carrying a shipment containing a large number of these batteries.
Are you sure it was not Lauda air 767?

No, it was the UPS 747. The Lauda Air flight 004 was brought down by a thrust reverser that deployed in flight.
Definitely contact Canon. I’ve never had a problem with a Canon battery in more than 15 years I’ve used Canon digital cameras. I’m on my fifth one.

I spoke to Canon today, after giving them the Ser# of the battery they offered to replace it as a one time courtesy. They did ask me to dispose of the battery at a local recycle center, which I did after speaking with them. What can you say about their customer service!!!

Glad to hear that they took care of you.
