Since we all here are photographers, I thought this should go under Photography Discussion.

I've always wondered what others do when you replace your 6 or 8 or 10 year old computer with a brand new one, aside from turning it over to Recycle People, what have you done with your old(er) computer?

I have an Apple G-5 iMac, about 8 or 10 years old. It is sitting at my side desk, unused. It still functions, and believe it or not, it has PSCS4 on it, along with Microsoft programs. They all function, but with a much older OS, compared to today's operating systems. I'm currently use High Sierra, and happy of course.

My guess, nearly everyone here has gone through this cycle like me. I'd like to learn what you all have done with your "old or older" computers, especially if they were Apple computers.

And thanks for your feedback.

I personally donate them to less fortunate folks. If you search a bit there are likely people in your area that help the less fortunate. I gather old machines that have been taken to the free recycle center at our local transfer station and make as many "good" machines as I can from the parts, load them with Linux (cuz it's free) and then donate them.

If I am giving it away or recycling; I reformat and partition the hard drive.

I'm not an " Apple guy", so here's what I've done with obsolete PC's in the past:

1. Suffer through months, if not a year or two of nagging from my wife,

2, I remove the hard drives, and they either pay a quick visit to my drill press and then get reinstalled, or they are opened and hung on my shop wall as decorations.

3. Then the PC goes to electronic recycling.

I haven't had to scrap a "ssd" yet, so I'm not sure what to do about those.

My brother rebuilds and upgrades them, then gives them away to people in need of a computer, but without the funds to buy one. I need to replace my laptops for work use on about a three year cycle.

Unless it's small (under 500Gb), I save the hard drive delete all personal files, run cypher on it, and format it.
(I have an external dock that will accept them.)
Other than that, they're recycled.

YEARS ago I used to save all drives, memory, power supply.
But not anymore.

I recycle mine. First I remove the harddrive which I either format and use for storage, or, if I don't have a use for it, I use my nailgun to drive several hails through it. Quicker then formatting and it prevents any personal info from being recovered.

I bought a new iMac. Apple gave me $230 for my old one. The have a trade-in program in place depending what you trade in. I also did that with my iPhone.

I like to have two working Windows computers, just in case. An old computer can also come in handy for parts. I've used power switches from old computers. I remove the second (data) drive and use it as a separate external drive for certain files.

I have a smaller version of one of these.

I drill through the hard drive

I used to just put them in a pile in the basement.
When I moved a couple years ago I took 6 old computers to the recycle people. Removed the hard drives and now they're in a smaller pile.

Now I have a desktop, a laptop, and an old laptop and an old tablet. They all get used for something, sometimes only once or twice a year. The tablet is now a photo frame using the screen saver.

I don't know about Apple computers. The Apple computers I ever had were the Apple II, the original Mac 128K, The Mac II but when I got them they were already obsolete.
As far as PC I had the PS/2 65 (a 386sx) and kept it until it died beyond repair. I had the Compag Presario 425 (486sx). It had 4MB of RAM and a 486sx-25. I upgraded to 20MB and 486DX66. I gave it to my brother and he sold it for something like $100.
I later had the HP Vectra XU 6/200 (a dual pentium pro). It had 32MB of RAM. 1 GB hard drive. I upgraded it to 96MB and 8GB hard drive. I kept it until the company that I worked for needed a PC that can run DOS and has ISA bus. They gave me a couple of Pentium 4 laptop in return. I then got the HP XW6000 which is a dual Xeon machine. I still have it. My current PC is about 11 year old which is an HP Z600 with dual Xeon. I have 48GB of memory in it. It runs Windows 10 and Photoshop CC OK.
So essentially I never get rid of my old computers if they are still functioning.
