Once again I call on the knowledge of this group for advice: The family is planning a three day stay in Yellowstone in June. It seems all the park hotels are already fully booked and by the time we solidify our travel arrangements they may all be gone. Does anyone know of lodging close to the park that has a good chance for open dates? We need two rooms and I'm looking for something in the 150.00 to 250.00 a night range per room. We don't require much in the way of amenities since we plan only to sleep, get up, have breakfast and head into the park for the whole day.
Thanks!

Depends on where you want to go within the Park. West Yellowstone is a convenient location.

Call Yellowstone Park everyday to check on cancellations. People make their reservations a year in advance and then things happen. Good luck.

A little perspective: Jackson Hole and Cody are about 100 miles from from Old faithful. A lucky trip would take 2 1/2 hours. Movement around the park can be quite slow. This summer there will be additional road closures.

West Yellowstone, west entrance, is a tough traffic entrance depending upon the time of day, but does offer a fair amount of lodging. Gardiner, north entrance, is the closest and also has several choices. Thr park lodging is not sold out, but choices are extremely limited for June. An d expensive. Check XANTERRA web site for reservation availability.

We've stayed in Jackson, Cody, and West Yellowstone. West Yellowstone is the most convenient. The others, if you want to do sunrise or sunset photography, will involve an hour and a half or so of night driving with some large critters roaming about. I like the drive from either one during daylight hours. The drive from Cody to the East Entrance has some open range and you might also encounter some cow critters along the highway. We did both morning and night. Red Lodge, Montana would also be a possibility.

An excellent choice: https://www.amazon.com/Yellowstone-Treasures-Travelers-Companion-National/dp/0985818271

https://gypsyguide.com/tour/yellowstone-grand-teton/ is another extremely useful App that is not dependent upon the scanty phone service.

Traveling the beautiful Beartooth Hiway from Red Lodge is a hundred miles from Tower and once at Tower, you can not use Dunraven Pass for the next couple years. W Yellowstone will likely be your best location. Don't worry about sunrise/sunset opportunities...there are plenty. Familiarize yourself with road closures before planning too much.

Yes Cody, Wyoming is a great place to begin at. Yellowstone is Not 100 miles from Cody, it more like 30+ miles. Don't forget Cody itself. You have to see the Cody Museum. You want to see what the real America was. Hope you have good weather and in joy your self.

I specifically said 100 miles to Old Faithful. Check the map link...it's accurate. 59 miles from Cody just to get to the east entrance, which essentially puts you 27 miles to the top of the lake! Oh, yeah, construction on that route too.

The park link to the map is worth pondering if one is making a trip. The park site also keeps track of the construction areas.

We are booked in there for two nights before continuing to Yellowstone. Thanks -- good suggestion.

I definitely second or third what Dave O says + others... It depends on where you want to go in the park. When we went, we were lucky enough to book at Yellowstone Lodge, which is centrally located... and did it 4 months in advance. If you haven't done your research; Start Now. There are basically four entrances. N, S, E, W. Even being centrally located, we wanted to spent one day in the Mammoth Area (north entrance) which is way North. By the time you account for traffic, sightseeing, critters, and maybe one stop; it can take you 4 hrs one way + you have to come back. There is a lodge in this area if that's on your hot list, if you can get in. Best advice: Book several locations if you can. Plan what you want to see, start early, and make the best use of your time. You won't be the only there. Good Luck. It's worth the trip.
