I am looking for a laptop to do photo editing and storing edited files.
Can anyone recommend specs I should look for i.e. video card, ram, storage, etc.
Intel® Core™ i7-8705G processor Quad-core 3.10 GHz
AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL with Dedicated Memory
15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 IPS
16 GB, DDR4 SDRAM
512 GB SSD...….$1499
Aspire 7...….. Bought a Aspire 5 for a Christmas gift impressed with what could be done with a `base` laptop. Talking to Acer Tech support. they seem sharper than most. With a laptop you can find them with a 1tb hard drive but realize it will slow your whole editing and cataloging down as they usually spin at 5400rpm. A large ssd 128 megs or more along with an external drive will give you the backup and space. I have backed up my whole collection twice. The one company I have been disappointed with was Lenovo. New laptop bad hard drive called tech support which was clueless
Thanks seagull5
Very helpful. Sorry to hear about Lenovo as their specs seem to be good and for a reasonable price about $1,000.

I have a Lenovo laptop, that has served me well for 7 years now. Windows 7 upgraded to Windows 10. The processor is outdated now, i3. One reason why I searching for a new laptop, by early April. I have to reduce the amount of my Xmas gifts balance, to my credit card first.

I bought a Lenovo LEGION Y545 at Costco a few months ago. It's working very well with my Adobe CC programs. A minor flaw is that it does not have an SD card reader built in so I use one that plugs into one of the fast USB ports.

Just like cars & everything else, you can get a bad one from time to time. I purchased a Dell Allienware gaming desktop pc & monitor. No pic after I plugged it in. Ran a hdmi cable to my labtop & had video. Called tec support & they told me the monitor was bad. Just because they are tecs working for a company doesn't mean they are all knowledgeable all the time. Went back to Best Buy the next day, a Geek Squad guy checked it out & said the video card was bad & they gave me a new computer. Still working 3 years later.
Nothing wrong Lenovo computers, Just got one of the bad ones. Heck, box could of been tossed somewhere in the delivery process.
Check your editing software for any minimum system requirements.
Oh! By the way, Windows Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. There will be no updates nor security offered by Microsoft anymore. I don't know if current security software is still effective or relevant. However, I have seen two You Tube Videos, that say you can still get Windows 10 from Windows 7 for free. Even though the free Windows 10 offer expired in 2016. Don't know if that is true or not. Or if it applies to all laptops or desktops? All computers have a mind of their own.
Thanks all for your input. Very helpful for my quest.
Just to help narrow it down.... look for a gaming laptop …. usually it is configured with or you can configure a very fast computer. Read the reviews and take care and sort them out. When I bought my desktop it is a gaming desktop big power supply and plenty enough juice to edit 4k video. I did get a 26 in gamer monitor and the whole package ends up with more power that I need. I know there is a lot of companies that will love to sell you this type of computer... just don`t get confused. If I can help I will be happy to. Just want to add....get a good return policy at least 30 days... and as long of a extended warranty as you can.
MacBook Pro $3300, 16 inch screen, 32Gb, 8Gb Video card
I like engineering laptops which are designed to run 3d cad. Personally I use Lenovos, but Dells or others can work as well. Both I and my daughter used W520 models with an i7 processor, dedicated graphics card and an SSD (which I installed) and upgraded ram (this model will take 32gb). She uses the full creative cloud and the computer still does fine. I recently upgraded mine to a P51 with current hardware and it flies.
Thanks again. I'm looking for good all around laptop with photo editing and storage capabilities. I'm not really a gamer just seems the gaming computers have similar configurations needed for my needs.
