took this one on "program", flash was raised - i was standing in same spot as the first "Among Friends"......

So, if you take an image without the flash, say as Linda suggested outside, what happens?

Yikes. Yeah, like Chg_Canon suggested, sure seems like flash is out of synch with opening/closing of shutter. Can you force the flash to not fire, either with a menu setting or button?

And yes, the "outdoor" question is still on the table

yes, flash was up all the way. If flash is out of sync with the shutter, is there anything I can do? I'm beginning to wonder if I have all of the settings somehow all mixed up. I'm starting to get confused also,; lol, time to take camera do a dealer I guess.

The white is the one on "Program AE" (P) and the reason it is so over-exposed is because the exposure compensation is set to +4 or higher.

If you can re-set the camera to factory specifications or have someone do it, you will be able to start fresh. If the flash isn't working, but you still have "outside in daylight" capability, you can then decide whether it's worth keeping the camera for its limited use.

We keep "talking" at the same time, making it hard to follow the thread, so I will step away for a few hours. All the best!

One more note: you have two similar user names! You originally created this topic as candle57, but your newest comments are with candle 57. I was very confused when trying to see if you were online, and looking for your most recent comments

You say you were shooting in P mode. Just rotate the dial until your shutter speed is 1/200 of a second or greater.

As we have seen, the non-flash shots were exposed poorly, in one case due to exposure compensation being on. However, in the flash shot I see "flash, auto, strobe return" as the setting selected. Not being a Nikon person, can anyone explain the meaning of "strobe return"?

As previously noted, the flash seems to only be affecting the lower section of the image. Is it possible that something is blocking the light from the rest of the image as opposed to a sync problem? Perhaps a lens hood in the way (which I know, should block the bottom, not the top), or flash not properly extended?

not a ball cap problem - don't own one. Lol! Hopefully getting to a camera store next week. I WILL post the outcome. Thankfully I have another camera - Canon Powershot, which I love.

Have a great day everyone. Happy shooting!

Well, sorry it's been sooo long since I've been on here. I wasn't able to get to a camera store because of the border still being closed from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick. Not knowing how much longer this will go on, I decided to order a camera online. I wanted one similar to what I had which was the Nikon D3100 - my new one is a Nikon D3500. So will be able to get out more now and start shooting. Thank you everyone for trying to help me out.Stay safe.

I don't know why, yet, when I take a photo, when I look on the screen on back of camera, it is mostly black or almost black - hard to tell what I took a photo of. It's either the whole screen or most of it, that is black.

I've been checking it out but no luck yet.
