A lot of Great Men served our country. God Bless them all. My father was in he Pacific Theater as well. Thank you for helping keep these people alive in our memories.
This is a great testimony to a great soldier/father...thanks for sharing his photo and the introduction!!
My Dad’s 100th birthday would occur in March. He was a WWII vet who was fortunate to be out of harm’s way for most of his service but my uncles weren’t so blessed. Dad had no problem answering my questions about his service...he just told me he was lucky. But when I asked him why my uncles never talked about their experiences, Dad would tell me they probably just don’t remember. As the years passed I learned the truth behind their silence and realized the impact it had on them and their families for many years to come. For many, the battles continued long after the last shot was fired.

Yesterday was my Dad's birthday. He would have been one hundred years old. This is his photo when he served with the Fourth Army in the 4th Armored Division during World War II. He landed in France in July of 1944. He earned four Bronze Stars and his unit was awarded The Presidential Distinguished Unit Award as the only armored division to be awarded this for "extraordinary tactical accomplishment" in spearheading the Army advance across France and Germany. Only the second time in U.S. Army history that this has happened. His unit fought with General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. General Patton wrote, "The accomplishments of this division has never been equaled. And by that statement I do not mean in this war. I mean in the entire history of warfare. There has never been such a superb fighting organization as the Fourth Armored Division."
His unit was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palms by the French government as "a magnificent unit possessing the highest military virtues contributing to the success of the campaign in Franc.
The Fourth Armored Division was recognized as the first liberating unit of a Nazi concentration camp by the U.S. Army's Center of Military History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1985.
My dad never spoke about the war and his accomplishments. I do remember once at the dinner table my brother asked if he had fought in the Battle of the Bulge and he simply said, "yea I did."
With all that he went through his greatest accomplishment was that as a great husband, dad and grandpa!
Happy Birthday Dad!

Thanks Dennis.....my Dad never spoke about his service on Normandy's beach either. I guess we just didn't realize how much they suffered from those battles and what they went through to make a great life for us. He lost most of his hearing from the artillery blasts and wouldn't wear a hearing aid but never complained about what he didn't get.......only celebrated what he had. I sure miss him terribly.

We all should be proud of him..A worthy salute!
Great accomplishments by your dad, Dennis, a true war hero by any standard, thanks for sharing this tribute to him.
You've got a right to be proud. Sing his praises.
A very nice tribute to your father. He saw so much action in Europe that he had to be impacted by it for a life time.
