I am headed to Norway later in February to shoot the northern lights for 10 days and will be arriving in Oslo a couple of days early. Any recommendations on locations, landmarks, or things "not to miss" while I am there waiting to head to Lofoten?

I have never been to Norway, but when I go some place I have never been before, I Google and what other web searches there is. As they say seek and thou shall find..happy hunting.

The Viking ship museum is incredible if you like old wooden watercraft. And Frogner Park if you like outdoor sculpture. I also recommend the Norsk Folkesmuseum. Here's a good list to start from:

Chemwood Loc: UK

Suggest you visit the Opera House and walk up it early in the morning if the sun is shining. Stunning... Also visit the museum where Kon Tiki is held and the Viking long boats -Oseberg and Gokstad ships - and finally the Vigeland Sculpture park. I wanted to see the Edvard Munch art gallery but unfortunately it was closed when I was there.. underground / tube system good in Oslo. Enjoy.

The sculpture garden in Frogner Park is spectacular - whether one has a previous interest in sculpture or not. This is a must see - and the photographic opportunities are spectacular.
The Holocaust Museum in Oslo provides not-so-well-known background to Norway’s involvement in World War II, and when one walks out of this building one understands the true derivation of the word ‘quisling’.
If in Oslo for 10 days worth an overnight trip to the fjord area west of Oslo (I recall taking the train halfway to Bergen is the route).

THERE IS A SCULPTURE PARK WITH VERY INTERESTING AND UNUSUAL SCULPTURAL WORK.

THERE ARE ALSO PLACES WHERE VIKING SHIPS ARE DISPLAYED. NORWEGIAN CHURCH ARCHITECTURE IS ALSO SPECIAL.

There is a website that someone shared on this site several years ago that I "bookmarked" on all my devices. The site is called "www.ShotHotSpot.com". Once you open up the site just put in the country, city, town, etc. and it tells the great spots for photos of points of interests, sunsets, landscapes, etc. I haven't used it in a while but I remember that there are filters for the best sunset or the most popular points of interest. Not only have I bookmarked it on my computer devices, I have it on my mobile phone too. It's not perfect, but sure gives you a direction. Have fun on your vacation. Let us all know if you used the site and did it work for you. Just for giggles I put in Oslo and it came up with tons of places to shoot.

The museum where the Fram is located. It was the ship in search of the North Pole in 1893 that was abandoned by the crew when it got stuck in the ice and two years later drifted onto the shore on Svalbard.

The museums of Vikings a must. The ski jump also spectacular, even dry. They have flying fox rides great museum too. The castle visit another in Oslo. The harbour surrounds amazing.

Day 1: Visit all the museums mentioned above. They are located within walking distance from each other in Bygdøy Peninsula and include the Norwegian Museum of Natural History, Norwegian Maritime Museum, Viking Ship Museum, Kon-Tiki Museum, and Fram Museum. You can get there by boat or bus. The boat leaves the dock right in downtown Oslo across the street/park from the City Hall. You can return to downtown by bus.

Day 2: Visit Vigeland Sculpture Park and Museum. It takes only about 30 to 40 minutes by bus from downtown. You just cannot afford to miss dozens of larger than life sculptures that represent human interactions. At sunset, visit Aker Brygge, a very charming area next to the dock for modern architecture photography. There are a lot of good restaurants here for a nice dinner.

We were in Oslo in late August-early September 1973 and I second the Viking ship museum. We spent that entire summer (11 weeks) traveling all around Europe by train, getting as far south as almost to Sicily. We had read that the most beautiful train ride in Europe was the one from Oslo to Bergen, so we did it- just to Bergen and back with about 2 hours in Bergen. It WAS the most beautiful train ride we had. We took a Viking cruise from Bergen in 2018 and Lofoten was one of our port calls; it is a beautiful place. Norway is the most beautiful country we have ever seen. Enjoy your trip!

I was in Oslo for 2 days last summer and enjoyed the harbor and museums there. Good luck on clear skies!
