Really nice shots. Growing up we had these guys living in Prairie Dog holes and raising a set of kids every year. Lovely creatures. I think they have both been losing habitat as pasture land is turned to cornfields.

Definitely! He obviously does not like you taking his picture...or maybe it's the flash, if you were using one.
Thank you all for your kind comments. I don't know how rare these birds are in my area but in all my years doing photography this is the only one I have seen. I did not use flash for these photos, only available light.

I had the opportunity to photograph one in the Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge.
He played with us for quite a while. We found out later he had a family in the burrow a female and 2 hatchlings.
