I am not a connoisseur, I only know what I like--really old mellow Port and Two-Buck-Chuck from Trader Joe's.

I can’t quite meet your criteria but four years ago, on my eightieth birthday I opened a 1944 port that a friend gave me many many years ago. I didn’t know about the heat/cold method of opening the bottle but would not have had the nerve to try it anyway. I don’t remember how I handled the cork but remember that I had to filter it to remove the cork remnants. I shall look for a bottle at least a year older than me for my eighty-fifth but it’s extremely unlikely I will be able to afford it.

I tried one once but it didn't work for me. IMHO good brandy should be drunk somewhere between room and body temperature and cupping the snifter in my hands for a few minutes works just right for me. Like good wine, good brandy should be sipped slowly and savored.

I googled "Old Mechanical Wine Decanter", then selected 'Images'. This is what came up.

Looks like a bottle sits in the frame on top. A candle goes in the holder.
You turn the crank to change the position of the bottle over the candle

The candle sits behind the bottle allowing you to see the sediment as it starts to flow toward the glass.

If that's the case they screwed up on this one. The candle is clearly on the neck side.

I found this in a second hand shop years ago and have yet to find anyone who knows for sure what it is for? Some guesses have been saki pouring and warming and maybe for brandy. No one knows for sure. The hand crank seems to tilt what looks like a cradle for a bottle and the candle holder lines up with the neck of the bottle to warm something. Thanks

Yes a wine decanter. It was designed to carefully pour vintage wine without sediment pouring out as well.
You would place a candle near the base of the bottle's neck. At the first sign of sediment, sometimes referred to as smoke, you would stop pouring

You must have missed watching Downton Abbey. I wouldn't have known what it was if the butler hadn't been using one in at least one of the scenes.

I gave my mother that over 20 years ago and she never found out what it was. She passed about 5 years ago. She would have enjoyed knowing as she was a wine drinker. Thanks to everyone for the conversation.
