Again...I ask, if you have a simple system that works on one camera, do you normally have to go through some type of changes when you get a new camera?

It's not complicated, just a lack of details to help answer your initial question.
-------

Open two File Explorer (or whatever they are called) windows:

1st One: File location of SD Card
2nd One: File location on your computer.

-----> In 1st window, select all files (Ctrl + a)
----> Drag those files to the 2nd window

That should work across any camera you own or borrow.

What you might do is learn how Windows Explorer works. Whatever you are using, appears it wants to be picky about camera brand. Windows explorer won't give a hoot. A file is a file.

Agreed. My preferred method of transfer.

Most newer computers are able to handle files from cameras the same age or older. If the camera came out after the computer (or the installed OS), you might need to update.

Thanks for the info, however a Nikon D300s qualify s as being in the "same age or older" group.

Have Windows 10 operating system. I shoot with Nikon. Over the years, have had no problem with downloading the Nikon pics from a Card Reader.

Borrowed a friend's Canon but was not able to download. Nikon - Yes; Canon - No

What's up? What do I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

If you are looking for previews so that you can see thumbnails of your images, you'll need to download the codec from Microsoft:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829

You'll see the 6D in the list of cameras supported by this codec.

If that doesn't work, then try this:

https://www.windows10codecpack.com/

Otherwise, as many have suggested - forget about the thumbnail preview and just drag and drop the files using File Explorer. No need to make this complicated. You can also download a free copy of FastStone Image Viewer which will allow you to read the images on the card and decided which ones you want to copy to your computer, and help you do that. It has its own codec which doesn't care what you have or don't have loaded on your computer.

Do you have an USB 2.0 slot on your computer. If so try that.

I looks like you are not using Windows File Explorer to copy your files to the PC. File Explorer does not ask a question in a pop up screen like you described. It will recognize whatever type of photo files are on the card. You simply select them, select Copy, and copy them to where you want them to be.

Gene,

That one was published in 2014. There is a newer one that is about 6 months old: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/raw-image-extension/9nctdw2w1bh8?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Your Windows explorer should see the file names even if it doesn't view the photo. All you need to do is click and drag the file where you want with Windows explorer. Older versions of the explorer will not view the files the newer ones will I believe so you may need to update your explorer. The other option, after transferring the file from the card to your computer is the use of file viewer other than explorer to view the photos oh, there are several of them around.

I just updated my Windows 10 to the very newest version and the Windows explorer will Reed and preview raw files. It will also give you the information on the photo when you mouse over the icon such as date taken the model of the camera ISO and all of that.

The other option is to use faststone image viewer which is a great viewing program what you can do a little bit more with in fact quite a bit more.

With all of that said I think you may need to upgrade your windows to the most current version. Ver 1903 is current.

It may be the card type. Some older card readers will NOT read formats of newer cards. You must have a card reader capable of reading whatever card you use. For instance, my older Mac Mini card reader will handle SD, and SDHC cards. It ignores SDXC cards entirely, although they will fit.

There are many variations on media in use. Be sure you know which formats your specific reader can read.

I have Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, and Panasonic cameras and I have no issues downloading from any of them.

As best as I can explain - I take the picture, remove the card from the camera and insert into Card Reader which is connected to the windows 10 computer. Normally (I use the software provided by MS) it activates a screen which has me directing what I want done...download, etc.

I use a Nikon D300s, and my friend's camera is a Canon 6D.

Does a "driver" come into play with this?

You DO NOT NEED ANY SOFTWARE AT ALL to copy/move from a memory card or a camera with Windows 10. The memory card or the camera will appear in File Explorer, you open it, and there are your files.

If this is not working with the Canon camera or the card from the Canon, there's something weird happening. It is NOT because it's a Canon camera or card.

Good point !! We don't know what type of card reader is being used. First you need to examine the cards and try to determine the difference and if your reader can read the "Canon" card. As others have said, if the card reader can read the card, the files can be copied to the computer hard drive. Displaying or opening the photo files is another question. That depends on the file extension and if your computer has a codec or software to interpret the "canon" file format.
