Here is an image shot maybe 20 minutes after sunrise. I cropped in-camera the mountain in the background because the sky did not add much, so the subject became the color of foliage with the rising mist adding interest. Note: you can see the mountain and the sky in the reflection, so you can see what was left out of the top. Crop out the reflection of the mountain and sky, and the trees become even more prominent. (Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine)

Excellent, excellent shots! Valdez is soooo pretty, shame most folks miss that area. The road going out of town is just spectacular! Love your autumn shots of it.

Thank you very very much Doug, you are so correct, I think the Thompson Pass is the best.

Wonderful images. My favorites are 2 & 4. They used to call Valdez the Switzerland of America. I lived in Alaska for four years and used to visit Valdez a lot. Wonderful place in the summer.

Thank you very very much, it is just so out of the way, but one of the nicest part of Alaska.

Hi Mike: Nicely composed, wonderful color, the mist/clouds are great. Now go back and look at the light in each image. To me the first and last are favorites. Imagine how these images would be upto "the next level" if they had been shot at the low light of dawn or evening. Note especially the light on golden trees in #1 and imagine the mountains and the sky being hit with the same early light. The sky, too, might have been more dramatic. Those mountains are amazing, but what if you had made the mist you main subject? Just moving the image up a bit on this site, cropping out the mountains (in the first image) I really like just the rising mist and those trees (also crop up just a bit along the bottom showing only the water).
as a refresher, google "why does mist rise from lakes in the morning?"
Hi Mike: Nicely composed, wonderful color, the mi... (show quote)
