Don't be too afraid of the cost of a replacement bulb. My projectors are always epsons, which are not generally cheap, and we use the Sony's at my work. (I am the one who purchases bulbs for that projector too) You can get off name brand ones for most projectors now from Amazon, or ebay, and say what you will, the new bulbs are always as bright, and last just as long as the OEM. Some people just think you HAVE to use OEM for everything, which isn't the case. Of course, before you pull the trigger, check the availability and cost of the replacement bulbs. I always keep 2 spares, because they can, and do get damaged when moving.

Actually, I'm writing this on a laptop hooked up to 24 inch monitor, which cost of around $125. If all he has are slides, he needs a Carousel or similar projector. If he's doing just digital he could use this setup. I forgot this this possible remedy. Thanks for reminding me.
