As usual you are right on target. I don't like the camera to alter my shot. I prefer to do all of the editing myself.

Can anybody really disagree with this assessment?

davyboy: "I whole heartedly agree raw can produce better photos. My beef is with those that look down their noses for shooting Jpeg. I donโ€™t discourage anyone from shooting raw. But in many cases it may not be noticeably better."

Disagree? Well, some qualifications:

* Processing raw files not only produces better results than relying on the camera JPEG software it also permits taking photos that are simply impossible relying on the camera software and that includes with post processing of the camera JPEGs. This one matters to me. I provided some examples earlier in the thread: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-622674-5.html#10753884

* This one's about degree: In many cases the processed raw may not be noticeably better? So we can extend the thread another four pages defining "noticeably." I would go with; occasionally the camera JPEG will not appear noticeably worse.

When editing photos I donโ€™t always need a miracle I kinda like the jpeg by bob.

You are free to like either one, of course. However, the choice is very clear for me. The jpeg version in general lacks sharpness and significant amounts of fine detail compared to Gene's raw version. Deep shadow detail recovery is very limited with lots of artifacts and significantly less sharpness. The edits to the jpeg file simply do not look particularly good, and cannot be compared in any way Gene's edits to the raw file.

For a test I shot Raw & Jpeg of the same photo. I edited them both. I only shoot Raw now. The difference was undeniable.

Tracy, that's exactly how I arrived at my decision in 2006 when I got a Nikon D200. And we had pretty crappy raw conversion tools back then. I used to use RawShooter.

I shoot RAW + JPEG. After I upload from camera to laptop, I can quickly view the JPEGs to identify the ones I don't want, then delete both the RAW and JPEG images. It would be much slower to screen through only RAWs.

Well, mr Fox .., this is oneโ€™ of the reasons I use both .. for one .., when out in the field ..I can do a quick analysis in my tent with my IPad and toss out a ton that I will not use .., freeing up my camera cards ..

Anyone shoot only RAW? I find as I shoot more and then go to edit and create catalog or a book of travel or events, I use Mac Photo and after importing and saving on my iMac I have to spend time pulling the RAW from the jpeg/RAW slot.
Any disadvantage to shooting only RAW besides the size of the file?

RAW in card slot 1 and JPEG for backup in slot 2. U rarely think of slot 2. every once in awhile i format it and start over....it will hold a ton of shots....

I have been shooting JPEG for 7 years and found the editing I can do is seeet. To take a line from McDonaldโ€™s commercial Iโ€™m lovin it!

I always shoot JPEG only. Some times use the one button auto enhancer in Apple Photos to sweeten the image when needed. To each his/her own is what I say.
