I think Moki Dugway is very neat and well worth the time to visit. Valley of the Gods at the foot of Moki Dugway is a very special place that is a rival, IMO, to Monument Valley. Without the admission and the big crowds and DUST! We did both in October, Moki and Valley of the Gods for the 3rd time and Monument Valley for the second time. If you like Moki Dugway style roads my new favorite switchback road is near Moab, a spur gravel road for high clearance vehicles from Canyonlands towards Moab called Shafer Trail. If you leave Canyonlands about 2 to 230 in the afternoon, and take it towards Moab you have a 3 -3 1/2 treat in store for you.(Light is best in later afternoon) Research it before taking it as it is narrow and rough in some places, and very remote. Probably the top 3 neatest roads I have ever been on. If you don't want to take it all the way you can drive down the switchbacks and turn around at bottom and go back up, I'd guess maybe an hour or so depending on how many stops to take photos you want.

Utah is full of scenic beauty. I lived there for two years and tried to take it all in, but really never got it all done. Some places I thought were fantastic that nobody has yet mentioned are Dinosaur National Park, and the huge copper mine pit at Magna, Utah. Dinosaur contains impressively deep canyons that include the junction of the Green and Colorado Rivers within their depths. Then there is Timpanogas Cave National Monument high up on a mountainside in Little Cottonwood Canyon southwest of Salt Lake City. If you are in good hiking health you can hike to the cave entrance on a steep blacktop path full of switchbacks. One park I never found anything of interest was Capitol Reef, but then I did not hike it either. Have a wonderful trip.

When going on Shaffer Trail you better check with the arranger station before embarking on it. Been there, done that. Worthwhile seeing though.

I’m considering a trip to Utah either between Christmas and New Years or early January. Would appreciate any info regarding access to the parks, suggestions from personal experience on favorite locations, etc. I will be driving 4WD vehicle.

I have never been in the winter, but the park I found had by far the fewest people was Canyonlands. Beautiful scenery and few people. If you really want to put that 4WD to a test, look at the White Rim Road. Again, not sure about winter weather or attendance.

Stayed at Goulding’s Lodge in Monument Valley (southern Utah), loved the area. Great views. Don’t forget the Escalante G.S. area as well. Somewhat more untamed then other areas in this loop.

An iconic shot is Mesa Arch at sunrise in Canyonlands (on clear day) and back through the windows at Arches. At least 45 minutes from Moab to Canyonlands to Mesa. Eat at the Moab Brewery in Moab-next to McDonalds -excellent burgers.. the Porcupine pilsner is my favorite. The Needles area of Canyonlands is great. 4WD trail-not bad- starting at Needles visitor center to end and then hiking is very good. The Drive west from Moab along the north side of the river is excellent. Bryce in snow is exquisite. One time I got 12" snow in Zion-only 4 cars there-unbelievable. Everywhere in southern Utah if great. Have spent days driving the San Rafael Swell area in winter and have weeks to go--in all of them. Be sure to check the ranger station on road issues. The ice on slickrock is tough. The drive from Bryce on Hwy 12 to Torrey is rated one of the most scenic in the US and then on to Hanksville. The only problem I see is you do not have enough time. Could go on and on. May want to consider ordering "Utah Road and Recreation Atlas" from Amazon.
