Hello Hedgehogs. Our challeng for today is Depth of Field.
Depth of field refers to the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp. It varies depending on camera type, aperture and focusing distance, although print size and viewing distance can also influence our perception of depth of field. The depth of field does not abruptly change from sharp to unsharp, but instead occurs as a gradual transition. In fact, everything immediately in front of or in back of the focusing distance begins to lose sharpness even if this is not perceived by our eyes or by the resolution of the camera. DOF is primarily controlled by aperture size though other factors come into play such as the focal length of the lens and the distance the background is from the subject.
Photographers may consciously control depth of field for artistic purposes, aiming to achieve attractive background blur known as bokeh. For example, a shallow depth of field is often used when taking close up shots so the background is blurred and the main subject is in sharp focus.
Deep depth of field means that all or most of the picture is in focus from front to back. It is often used for capturing subjects in the distance, such as in landscape scenes.
The further away your camera is from the subject, the greater the depth of field.
Higher f-stop numbers obtained by using smaller apertures produce deep depth of field. Short focal lengths, such as when a lens is set at wide angle, help increase depth of field.
Less depth of field (shallow) means that a subject is in focus but objects in front and behind it appear out of focus. Less DOF is often desired when taking portrait, close-up and macro shots.
Lower f-stops (larger apertures) decrease DOF. Long focal lengths (zooming in) produce less DOF.
You can also make the background appear out of focus by placing the subject close to the camera and having the background far away.
I have first posted a chart as an example for a better understanding.
also here is a link to a Depth of Field calculator.

Example from online Remember the smaller the number the larger the opening of your lens.
F/4.5, focal length 37mm
F/5.8, focal length 150mm
F/5, focal length 59mm
F/6.3, focal length 22mm
F/4, 15mm
Please be patient with my comments today. I have to go to the hospital for some test they are not sure if my gallbladder is functioning properly or it is a kidney issue. I promise I will do my best to comment on your post.

Excellent examples! I always like going back to remind me of situational awareness or compositional (is that a word) awareness. I like going on my as I call them 'field trips' amd when I see my shot take it and then look and see what is behind me.

Thinking of you - all the best....

DoF can really, in my view, enhance/change a photo by getting the eye to focus on what you want it to with shallow dof to getting the whole picture with a large dof. I went out with my mentor one day earlier this year and kept these to remind me to USE dof! I have since used it on the flowers!
Shallow dof - only fence in focus
Medium dof - getting more in focus
Large dof - everything visible
Climbing Rose
Looking down on a lupin
