I don't know why, yet, when I take a photo, when I look on the screen on back of camera, it is mostly black or almost black - hard to tell what I took a photo of. It's either the whole screen or most of it, that is black.

I've been checking it out but no luck yet.

Nikon D 3100

Is there a screen brightness control in your camera's menu system???

Are the images black when you upload them to your computer? If not, you have a preview screen problem. If they're black on the computer you're either badly underexposed or some other issue, perhaps a shutter problem.

candle57, attached an original JPEG image, being sure to store the file. It would seem the issue is your exposure settings, not the LCD display settings. If you put the camera to auto mode, does that resolve the issue? We'll know more when we can see and download an actual image.

Cathy,
Without a photo it’s hard to guess what might be causing it, but by saying all black or mostly black, it makes me think it’s possible you’re shooting with flash at too high of a shutter setting.
If the example below looks like your photos, you should probably read this:

In computer parlance we have a term PEBKAC. It translates to Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. It seems like the problem is needing to learn your camera.

you are exceeding the flash sync speed of your camera. The fastest you can sync is 1/200 and you are shooting at 1/500.

I'm not sure, but I think the 3xxx series also has auto FP or High Speed sync, but your flash also needs to have it.

Try the same thing, but don't go higher than 1/200, and I bet your black bar disappears.
