I know we have a lot of Mac users on here, so I have a question for you. Do you use a laptop or desktop when working at home?

I have an idea in the back of my mind to get a 13" Macbook, and I'll keep asking questions till I don't have an excuse not to get one. :D

Hi Jerry, I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch that I use exclusively at home for work. IMHO you should look at the 15" vs the 13". With the new retina display and the newly designed body of the 15", it is very light and the extra 2 inches (No pun intended) goes a long way. I love my Mac and would never go back to a PC. Cheers.
PS, I just noticed a couple of people talking about the hard drive and why you should go with the 13". The new 15" can come with a solid state drive as well, so that isn't an issue. Also, They are build like tanks and I have never had an issue with mine and it is about 4-5 years old.

I'm not aiming for a Mac just to see how much money I can spend. I like the smaller size of the 13", even though we don't travel much at all now. I'd like to get into the Apple world, and a smaller, lighter machine seems a good way to start - in addition to my wife's new iMac.

If I were to get all I wanted in a Mac, it would come with a huge bill, something I don't need. That's one area where Windows machines have the advantage. You can load them up and still come in lower than a basic Mac. I know, the Mac is better. :D

I don't know if it means or proves anything but, I just returned from a professional print shop where I just ordered 20 prints. They are a Mac shop. They must have a dozen desk to Macs running in their place. I asked them how to set the Parameters in my Nik sharpening filter. i.e. type of printer, DPI, etc. I was told they use "UV" ink jet printers at 600 dpi. When I asked what the "UV" meant, he explained that ultra violet lamps dry the inks. Seems a bit strange to me. You would think that ir would be better for producing a drying heat?

I just ordered twenty prints of the attached pic. (ten 5x7 and ten 8x10) They print them on foam board ready to hang.

I never saw it until the print shop showed it to me. Actually I think it's thick white paper with a Styrofoam backing. It makes the picture stiff and rather durable.

I have a venerable Mac G4 which I use as a scanning workstation for flat art and film. My iMac has 12gig of memory, CS5 and 5tb of online storage. My 15” MacBook Pro is used for reviewing images on the road, the screen is too small for extensive editing. My first Mac was the SE, 9” screen and floppy drive.

Yes, the Mac may appear to be more expensive than a Windows machine. The Mac is far less expensive in terms of headache and downtime. Few problems with hacking and virus issues are a big plus with the Mac OS.

Its not the heat drying you think. The ink itself reacts to the uv to cure quickly. With regular ink as it drys there are gasses type emissions. With the uv ink there is very little to no emissions. The ink cures when exposed to the uv light. Ask you wife about nail salons they have been using uv dryers for years. Also the same principle uv curing that dentist use (the blue light)

Ah so.... Thank you for explaining that to me. The print shop is HUGE and there is no chemical smell at all, that I can detect. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I've spent too much on Adobe to switch to another program. The latest PS6 I got can be installed on 2 PCs and one Mac.

I agree with the no viruses, and lockups. I have been running my 17” MBP for over 3 years and just picked up MacKeeper and ran it, found nothing other than duplicated files. This program has may other features such as deleted file recovery and firewall. One think to keep in mind with a MAC you still need some type of firewall. You can be easily hacked into with out one, with every thing being wireless it makes it easy. Part of a virus program is a firewall without it your pass words and may other things are variable. Most routers have some sort of firewall but not enough. If you are in public places you open yourself up wide open. During an IT type briefing they said they love to be in airports and free wifi areas with mac computers in the area, so easy to get into them.

You can use any internet site or mail program that you want. You can use the Mac email program or just log onto your Yahoo or whatever server you use. On my laptop I just log on to Yahoo instead of letting the Mac program bring in the emails, no reason to fill it up with them. At home I use the Mac program as it has good mailbox features & I have no problem there with storage. Don't know how much room they take up but with a 2T drive it doesn't matter much.

I have the desktop imac 27 and just love everything about it. I switched from a PC and have had absolutely zero complaints. I work all my pictures with elements 8 and print some of my prints without any trouble at all. Forgot to mention I have had it since 2009. I am going to upgrade system to Mountain Lion in the near future. Right now i am in the process of upgrading my ram to 8g.
