I am all for feeding starving people, kids included, but this looks like some sort of scheme. A penny for the kids and 99 cents for the owner of the machine. Maybe I'm wrong.
Free air still available here at a filling station near me.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I posted the photo. Starving kids and compressed air are strange bedfellows. I would steer clear of button #15-a, and spend my valuable time trying to figure out what the hell all the other buttons do.

Those of us who believe film will never disappear have apparently forgotten not only the sad fate of Kodachrome, but also nickel Cokes and free air to fill your tires. Not to mention "feature creep," as demonstrated by the shot of a contemporary air machine below. In days gone by, when you picked up the hose from the hanger the air turned on, and when you hung it back up it went off. There are about 15 buttons on a machine like the one below, not including the "Feed My Starving Children" button. As an added convenience, you can't pay with cash.

Those free air pumps also were at gas stations where two or three employeed would come out of the station, pump your gas, clean your widshield, check the oil and transmission fluid levels and even check the air pressure in your tires and inflate or deflate as needed. Find a place to do that today. Gasoline and wages werea lot lower back then too.

I just heard that Lomography is introducing a new colour negative film called, Lomochrome Metropolis.
With a small rise in interest in film lately this is somewhat intriguing. My daughter the other day called and was interested in a good used film camera and was wondering what to get so we discussed it and using film in general.
She has a couple of DSLRs and several lenses but it seems that among some younger people there is a bit of an interest in using film and experiencing the wait and the anticipation to see as well as the different look.
Has anyone else heard of this small movement of interest in film?

I, for one, still shoot film on occasion. I use two AE1P, one B/ W, one color.
Why? Cannot see these cameras sit, unused.
And the uncertainty factor.
Just like Rock 'N' Roll, film will never die.
Why should it?

Yeah, I've heard some murmuring. Not sure what it's all about. Maybe the same mindset that is bringing back vinyl record players and electron tube driven electronic equipment.
Tube amps give the best sound! Just ask any guitar player or audiophile!

And that fact can be proven.
Music is analog. Tubes are analog.
Digital is samples, no matter how small, a dead spot between samples.

The ENIAC was a digital computer and it did have 20,000 vacuum tubes.
Digital imaging sensor generate an analog voltage for each of the pixels.

Worked on the A/N-FYQ-7. Largest computer ever in physical size. Tubes the size of a human head. No more than five people in the computer room or the temp change would cause the computer to “crump.“ Every Sage (semi-automatic ground environment) Direction Center had two- Bonnie and Clyde. North American Air Defense Command.

There are reasons why we like the tube sound. The “dead spot” between samples is not one of them.
Digital signal processing involves passing a digitized signal through a filter. There is no “dead spot” in the reconstructed waveform because it is an analog waveform.

What was the mean time between service like on that computer?

Tubes are amplifiers. Just like semiconductors, they can be used in digital or analog circuits. It is the circuit that is digital or analog, not the device.

We have free air too in LA and you can see the air. The clear air costs more. 😳
Film photography has become a niche field. It provides its own satisfaction. Yet digital photography surpassed it years ago.
