Are the current Nikon sale prices pretty good for a D500 and D7500? Are they once a year?

How would folks compare the quality of the 180140 lens that can come with the sales cameras vs an older 18-200 VR lens? ie, it's "on sale" too and is it a good lens and is the price pretty good?

Thanks

I got the 18~140 as a kit lens with a D7100. It's the best kit lens I have. It's a bit slow but sharp. As far as the Nikon sales, I can only say that their prices are higher than Roberts, B&H, Adorama etc. If you have to have new, go for it. I have found that refurbished and used from the above outlets are well worth it.

Nikons sale price looks to be on par with Amazon. If I were you, I'd also check Adorama and B&H online. I have a D500. I love it. I would pay that price in a heart beat.

The 18-140 is going to be my Christmas present to myself. I can't vouch for whether it's better or worse than the 18-200. If it were me, I'd get the 18-140 and save for the 70-300.

Hope this helps.

My 18-140mm was part of a D7200 kit and it has performed well for me over the years. I use it on my D500 as well. As you can see in the pic, DxOMark rates the 18-140mm higher than the 18-200mm, especially in sharpness (10 perceived mp compared to 6 perceived mp on a 20.9mp D500).

Wife happy with thousands of shots, but did move to the Tamron 18-400 for traveling. Quite happy with that as well.

I'm getting the urge for an upgrade to the D500. I'm kind of waiting for X-Mas sales that might include a Free battery grip.

My impression speaking to B&H sales persons and local camera shops,is that Nikon sets the price and it has to be followed and generally Nikon sales are at least 3-4 times annually.

As I don’t follow this stuff, is there a pattern to Nikon sales?
Are there always sales in October or Black Friday, Xmas, etc?

Thanks

The 18-200 DX is an older lens that, to me, was increasingly unsatisfactory. In my mind, there are currently three good choices for “every day” DX lenses:

1) 18-140 DX - sharp with wide range, good reviews
2) 16-80 DX - new, fast, slightly wider angle, great reviews. The older 16-80 DX is also good and a bargain used.
3) 18-300 DX - widest range, scorned by purists.

I have all three, and honestly, when I don’t know what I am walking into, I take the 18-300 for the convenience of carrying a single lens. But I like the longer reach, and your needs might vary.

Concerning the bodies, the D500 is the way to go, especially for wildlife, if the budget permits. Both are good.

You will undoubtedly be pleased with whichever combination you end up with. Happy shooting!

Nikon will have sales again BLACK FRIDAY, CYBER MONDAY, and over the Holidays. They will usually throw in a vertical grip, usually the best prices are from Black Friday into the Holidays. But Nikon has sales several times during the year and also put different lenses on sale at different times of the year.
I still own my 18-200 II mm lens, if you still own that lens their is no need for the 18-140 as the 18-200 has the greater reach. I would get the II version of the 18-200 if you currently do not own this lens.
You can still find early 18-200 lenses that were produced in JAPAN before production was moved off the island.

The 18-140 is a great lens. You can not go wrong by getting this lens.

I looked at that lens but was more impressed with the Tamron 35-150. I have been using the Tamron as my walk-around lens and very happy with the performance on my D500 and D850. Seems very sharp and fast to focus. I'm happy with my choice.

The 18-140 hardly ever comes off my 7200. It is extremely sharp for a kit lens. It's as sharp as my 35 prime.

In the past, Nikon seemed to have big sales between Black Friday - New Year, and again between Mother’s Day - Father’s Day (May-June).
