I am Planning a trip this Feb for Carnival in Venice and?
1st any suggestions on what else to do, where to stay events to attend etc.
2nd I have a Nikon D500 witch I like and will use for around town shots and landscape type photos, but think it might be a bit much for any of the indoor events Balls People street photography day and night events aswell etc.
I am thinking about a small P&S/Bridge/4/3/Mirrorless, with good low light capabilities and 20MP or so, And would like some suggestions, on both the event and possible cameras/ budget 2000 for the camera.
Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.I will want to make prints when I get home up to 16x20

I too own a D500 and a D7200 but am not familiar with Nikon point and shoot and Bridge cameras. I own several Canon bridge cameras and my favorite is the 24 megapixel APS-C G1X III. It's great for indoor photography and general photography when you don't feel like carrying a larger camera. With 24 megapixels you will have no problem printing 16 X 20 and the camera costs under $1000.

I also shoot a D500 and a D7200 and I added a Panasonic Lumix G9 with a fairly complete arsenal of lenses this year, mainly because I wanted something a little smaller that wasn’t as awkward to carry and use in a kayak. And I love it, but if I was looking for something for low light and street photography I would probably just invest that money in some new glass for the D500.

Yes - I know I am a died in the wool Panny M43 user, but they do market some really excellent travel cameras. There are 20 mpx models and a good selection of lenses. I have recently acquired a GX8, retro rangefinder style to replace my G3 and G5 cameras, and now have just two lenses, 12-32 and 35-100. (two x crop, of course). The 20 mpx GX8 has now finished production, but is still held in high esteem, with fully articulating monitor and 45 degree tilting EVF which is fully viewable with spectacles. and weather sealing (as is the 12-32). The menus are easy peasy to use, and there is an EC dial. I believe you could pick up as new little used similar kit for half your budget.

I did Venice in 2017 with D810 and D800E, one with 24-70 f2.8 and 20mm f1.8 on the other. You can never have too much wide angle lenses in Venice. Interiors of churches, museums, palaces are fairly dark, and flash is generally not allowed inside, so fast glass can help a bit.

I stayed in an airb&b just 10 min walk from St. Marks square. Most of Venice is 20-25 minute walk away from wherever you're at. If you have a lot of luggage + camera gear bags, pick a place close to a vaporetto stop. Lugging suitcases any distance, over narrow cobblestone paths, many with steps, is not fun. Do not bring a tripod!

Do not be affraid to get totally lost on your walks about. Google maps on your phone is the best way to find your way around Venice. Enjoy!

I went to Venice in fall of 2017 for ten days. We stayed in an apartment on one of the canals. I have never gone to Carnival. It was really, really crowded as the big tourist ships come in and let hundreds of people off. I cannot begin to imagine it during Carnival. We simply got out and walked each morning and evening. The mornings were great because there were fewer people about. Evenings it got pretty crowded. Good street photography anywhere you go, just keep walking and looking. Very nice "urban landscapes," too. Check moon sunrise and sunset charts. You can view some of my shots at https://www.cassinettophotos.com/urban-landscape---venice-italy.html. Mostly medium angle lens (Nikon 24-120), sometimes wide angle for the "different" effect and a very few times a longer lens, I think the 70-200. Had a Nikon D800 with me.

I would recommend looking for accommodation in the area around Ca' D'Ora vaporetto stop in Cannaregio. It is about equidistant to the train / bus stations and San Marco and close to the Rialto Bridge, the Jewish Quarter and the Fondemente Nova for ferries to the Airport and Burano and Murano. The two man gondola traggheto at Santa Sofia will take you across (stand up like a Venezian) to the Fish Market and the Fruit and Veg market in a jiffy for 2 Euro. Also, the main pedestrian route, the Strada Nova runs through it which makes it easier to navigate the whole city. Lots of restaurants along the Strada Nova or venture into the neighborhoods just off the main strip for less touristy eateries.

Dawn or very early morning is the best time to capture the charms of Venice as it wakes up and be sure to visit Burano for a photo feast. February could be quite chilly and wet so pack accordingly.

Thank you. We had a great time exploring the area. I thought my back was going to break and never heal when I was done!! I almost got a back surgery when I returned but decided not to in the end. Those cobbles are hard!

Bring good knee high waterproof boots! There are often flooded streets and the locally sold plastic booties are not great.

Take a tripod. Yes, it's a pain to pack and carry, but how many opportunities are you going to get to capture Venice at night? And remember that in February your days will be shorter and light may not be the greatest. Even a tabletop tripod is better than nothing.

I've never been to Venice, Italy. But, since the mode of transportation is by boat there. I would recommend you arrange your camera strap, in such a way, that it does not fall in the water. I once witnessed a photographer accidentally drop his Nikon D810, at a pool party. Leaning over the pool, to get a difficult shot. The D810 fell overboard on the deep end of the pool. It was retrieved. But, condition afterwards was unknown. As, the photographer left the party immediately. The best Bridge camera to take just about anywhere, is the Sony RX10iv. A little expensive though. Or, the Sony pocket camera, RX100iv. These are exceptional cameras. And both shoot in RAW. Have a great trip in February.

I just use a D3400 for my “travel camera.” With the appropriate DX lenses (e.g. 10-20; 18-55), this makes a small(ish) lightweight rig without having to invest in a whole new ecosystem.

Have a great trip!

Great site here for ideas of what you might encounter during Carnival in Venice. I know someone who took this tour and came back with some amazing photos.
