My Z6 is now blazing fast AF after I set a few of the menus to change the default settings. I have it set to: AF-C, CH+
Dynamic AF-area mode
Focus tracking lock-on to "quick" +1
half of the focus points
turned off the Active-D lighting
face and eye detection is off
Long exposure NR is off
High ISO NR is off

With these settings, anything that can slow down the processing is turned off. I believe that AF is as fast as my D500. I find that most of the focusing issues are me because I am 71 now and my reaction time has slowed down considerably. When I review images in-camera, I find that the red square that shows my focus target is sometimes not on the target, which means I am not physically keeping up with the moving subject. But when I am on-target, the images are sharp as a tack and much better than the D5 is in low-light.

I don’t use AFC because the red square doesn’t turn green and focus priority does not work with it. I do better with AFS and focus priority.

Interesting these reviewers didn’t get that it doesn’t have IBIS:

User name "larkahn" mentioned all except the a6500. My friend wants to upgrade from the a6000 to the a6500. Perhaps that is why he wants it. IBIS.

That's probably IT, Mas … the only other Sony line which have it - are the a9 and a7 Series (newer ones.)

That is Toadall Bewlschidt. So self-evident
that no further explanation needed. WTF.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

The original A6000 (still popular) as well

Sterling example of adult literacy.
Very encouraging !

Have you ever tried a Fuji mirrorless camera?
With most of the controls on the body, very little
need to go into menus. I have lot of different
brands of cameras and enjoy using my Fujis the
most.

Odd, but Fuji is the only brand I don't use.

And I think they are excellent, especially as
to the external dial controls that you have
mentioned. The great thing about Fuji dials
is that they actually control basic settings.

I have many cameras having numerous
external dials ... which makes them appear
to have Fuji's style of basic controls ... BUT
it's a false appearance. All those external
dials that I almost NEVER use ! They are
not major controls, they are AE exposure
biasing, mode changing, AF controls, and
other non-basics, yet the same cameras
lack dials for the main controls, such as
aperture etc etc etc. So BRAVO Fuji !

But you cheated. You read the instructions
and applied a reasonable degree of human
intelligence and initiative. This is simply
NOT how the marketers of highly robotic
devices intend for you to interact with
their products. IOW, your results really
do not count ;-)

I also consulted with an NPS member who also happens to be a premier Nikon camera shooter for the Z cameras. We reviewed all the settings and decided that these would work best for our sports sessions---:)) So far, I am very pleased with the high ISO and low light capability of the Z6. It's as good as my D3s for sports (and better than the D5). I haven't shot it yet for low light sessions for plays and concerts so I don't know how it will do with facial tones.

Gee, I thought I was just helping educate some folks out of the point and shoot era....

...I wouldn't begin to shoot one of my pageantry events with my Z6. No way it's "better" than my D5. No way.

Rather, "the smaller DX mirrorless"

Not the smallest by a long shot!

No, it's "the smallest DX mirrorless camera".

In fact, it's the ONLY DX mirrorless camera.

There are APS-C mirrorless (Fuji, Canon, Sony).

There are full frame mirrorless (Sony, Nikon, Canon, Panasonic).

There are Micro 4/3 mirrorless (Olympus, Panasonic).

There was even a CX mirrorless at one time (Nikon).

"DX" is a Nikon term... it means "APS-C", sure. But only Nikon and Tokina use the term "DX". Tokina only uses the term on lenses, while Nikon uses it on both cameras and lenses.

Sooooo... for what it's worth... The new Z50 is the "only" mirrorless DX camera.... which means it's also the smallest!

Perhaps not for you. But I did several trials with both of them and the Z6 images taken at ISO of 12,800 to 14,000 were much cleaner and brighter than the D5. And as a matter of fact, the D3s that I have was much better than the D5. Even DxO ranks the D5 as poor under high ISO lighting.
