While in Alaska, I was getting pepper spray and was told by saleswoman to get a bell to wear on my jacket to warn bears of my presence. She picked one off the rack, gave it a jangle and someone in line said, "Ah, the dinner bell!"

In Alaska one is always warned when walking in the woods, etc. to keep saying "Hey Bear! Hey Bear!" to alert bears that there is food in the neighborhood. Last place you want to be is between mama and her cubs and shouting "Hey Bear! Hey Bear!". She already knows you're there and knew long before you got there whether shouting or not. As Teddy Roosevelt said "Speak softly and walk backwards very slowly."
